The Schengen area is one of the most popular destinations in the world. One of the main conditions for visiting Schengen is to have health insurance, which is required to obtain a Schengen visa. Find out more about when insurance is mandatory, what it must cover and where to buy it
The Schengen area, consisting of 29 countries, is one of the most visited destinations in the world. In addition to its natural beauty and rich cultural heritage, Schengen is a popular choice among travellers, as the absence of borders in the region facilitates the free movement of tourists.
One of the key requirements for travelling here is to have a health insurance policy. It will be needed both for obtaining a Schengen visa and for the safe stay of tourists from visa-free countries. The minimum amount of risk coverage should be 30,000 euros for the entire period of stay.
Why is this amount of insurance required? What risks does the policy cover? Find out more in this article.
Do I have to have insurance to get a Schengen visa?
According to the European Parliament's regulations, in order to obtain a visa, an applicant must have full health insurance that covers unforeseen insurance costs in the Schengen area. The EU Visa Code also requires a health insurance policy.
However, this issue is not clearly spelled out in the legislative acts of the European Union. Detailed information on the need for an insurance policy for Ukrainians travelling on a visa-free regime can be found here.
Why is the sum insured EUR 30,000?
The €30,000 cover requirement is the minimum amount of risk insurance that your policy must meet in order to be valid for applying for a Schengen visa. This amount was determined based on a thorough analysis of various factors and was chosen as the amount of average medical expenses in the Schengen countries.
According to experts, lowering the minimum amount of risk insurance may lead to insufficient coverage, while raising it may impose an unnecessary financial burden on travellers.
It is worth noting that EUR 30,000 is the minimum amount, and travellers can choose a higher amount of coverage if they wish.
Is the €30,000 cover requirement mandatory for all Schengen visa applicants?
Yes, as part of the Schengen visa application process, all applicants must provide proof of travel insurance that meets certain criteria, including the mandatory €30,000 cover requirement.
If your insurance policy does not meet the €30,000 requirement, it will not meet the criteria for Schengen insurance. As a result, if you apply for a Schengen visa with insurance that does not meet this requirement, your visa application will most likely be rejected.
