Ukrainians break records for opening sole proprietorships: where and what kind of business is registered most often?
In the first quarter of 2024, a record number of new businesses were registered in Ukraine. The number of sole proprietorships opened over the past three months exceeds the figures for pre-war 2021. According to the Unified State Register, in the first quarter of 2024, Ukrainians opened a record 74,050 new individual entrepreneurs. According to Opendatabot, this is a third more than in the same period in 2023 and 18% more than in pre-war 2021.

In which cities of Ukraine do people start new businesses most often?
According to the infographic above, Kyiv is the undisputed leader in the number of new sole proprietorships. In the first quarter of 2024, 10,252 new businesses were opened here, accounting for 13.8% of the total number across Ukraine.
Dnipropetrovska oblast is in second place: 6.8 thousand new sole proprietors were registered here. The third place goes to Kyiv region with 5.7 thousand new businesses. Lviv region (5,582) and Kharkiv region (4,888) round out the top five.

What types of businesses are most often started in Ukraine?
A quarter (25.7%) of newly registered businesses are engaged in retail trade. According to Opendatabot, this is the most popular area and has been a consistent leader over the past 4 years.
In addition to retail trade, the top areas of activity of new sole proprietors in the first quarter of this year included
– personal services (8.2%)
– IT (7.9%);
– wholesale trade (6.0%);
– information services (5.9%);
– catering and transportation (4.3% each);
– 31.2% of new businesses are in other niches.
