How unemployment benefits will be changed in Germany

The Bürgergeld social unemployment benefit in Germany, which Ukrainian refugees receive, is planned to be paid under new conditions in the future. In particular, recipients will have to accept jobs that require a long commute. The catalog of measures approved by the ruling coalition on July 7 stipulates that the travel time to the place of work may be

– up to 3 hours a day if the working day is longer than 6 hours;

– up to 2.5 hours if the working day is less than 6 hours;

– the place of work may be within a radius of 50 km from the place of residence.

It is also planned to abolish taxes and fees for overtime. Employees who increase their working hours while working part-time will be exempt from taxation. The details of the upcoming measures will be clarified during the budget discussion in the Bundestag.

It is worth noting that German politicians are increasingly calling for the deprivation of Ukrainians of Bürgergeld assistance to encourage them to find employment. However, the German government does not plan to cancel this assistance for Ukrainian refugees. Instead, the country will strengthen control measures over illegal employment to prevent abuse of benefits.
