Since the start of the full-scale invasion, more than 200,000 refugees from Ukraine have fled to the UK in search of refuge and safety. However, according to the British Red Cross, these people are once again at risk of homelessness.

Of course, government programs are designed to help refugees find asylum in a new country. However, significant shortcomings have been identified in the protection procedure, and the level of training and support provided by host countries is insufficient.

Problems of resettlement and protection of Ukrainian refugees in the UK

Since the launch of the Homes for Ukraine program, more than 200,000 families from Ukraine have been accommodated in the UK. However, about 9,000 of them are now at risk of homelessness due to the breakdown of relations with host families and limited access to the private housing market.

According to the Red Cross report, refugees from Ukraine are 4 times more likely to experience homelessness than the population as a whole. In the first 6 months of 2024, about 380 new refugees from Ukraine arrived in the UK every week.

In Glasgow and Edinburgh, 2 ships were equipped to accommodate 2465 migrants. However, this decision was criticized due to poor living conditions and lack of separate kitchens. Due to the difficult situation on the private housing market, some refugees from Ukraine had to spend the night in unsuitable conditions: on beaches, in parks and other public places.

Some families who were a little more fortunate had to sleep in one bed together. It is also not uncommon for refugees to change more than 6 places of residence in 2 years of migration. And women in search of housing became victims of sexual exploitation.
