A new center for temporary accommodation of newly arrived Ukrainians has been opened in the Latvian capital, Riga. According to lsm.lv, the head of the Riga Center for Support of Ukrainians, Peteris Grube, spoke in detail about the launch of the center. Find out how the center will help Ukrainian refugees adapt to the new environment.

Initial housing for 120 days and other assistance

The new center in Riga is designed to provide initial accommodation for Ukrainian refugees for up to 120 days. During this time, people can find permanent housing, work, and enroll their children in kindergartens and schools.

At the same time, it is noted that usually Ukrainians do not need the full 120 days to adapt - most move to permanent housing within 30-40 days.

According to the head of the Ukrainian support center, about 630 Ukrainian refugees arrive in Riga every month. Of these, 125 people will be accommodated in the new center, and the rest will be housed in city dormitories. The center will help newcomers adapt to life in Latvia, find work and housing.

The first Ukrainian refugees were settled in the new center on July 22.

Living conditions in temporary housing in Riga

In 2023, the Department of Housing and Environment renovated the second and third floors of the building, which will now house Ukrainian refugees. The building has a total of 50 rooms, which are combined in blocks - there are shared facilities for two living rooms. The average size of a living room is 12 square meters. The rooms are equipped with furniture, kitchen appliances and other household items.

In addition, on the ground floor of the building there is a multifunctional day center of social services for children and adults “Paaudzes”, which also supports Ukrainian refugees. The center provides the necessary social assistance and support, facilitating the faster adaptation of newcomers.

We remind you! Citizens of Ukraine who have refugee status in Latvia usually work in various sectors of the Latvian economy. Read more about the most popular industries and what percentage of Ukrainians are engaged in low-skilled work in the country in our previous article.
