The introduction of innovative technologies is becoming a key factor in the development of modern infrastructure. The motorway lighting control system, based on the principles of intelligence and adaptability, is designed to improve road safety and optimise energy costs. Read more about the innovative lighting in Italy, how it works and where it is installed in the article below.

The latest road lighting system for cars in Italy: details

OnRoadMag reports that the so-called ‘falling light’ was installed at the initiative of Autostrade per l'Italia, which manages the network of toll motorways in Italy, and approved by the country's Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport.

The pilot project, which uses the latest technology, is designed to increase driver safety and comfort and improve visibility at night and in foggy conditions.

The lighting system, which has already been tested on selected sections of the ring road in Naples, has now been additionally installed on the Roma Sud branch of the A1 motorway, near the Torrenova interchange.

How does it work?

The 41 16W LED projectors are installed directly at a distance of 4.5 metres from each other and at a height of 0.9 cm from the ground. This creates what is known as an optical guide that illuminates the road's contours. The 16-watt devices are placed inside the protective barrier fabric at the exit from the intersection.

The central element of this system is a control unit that collects data from sensors installed on the luminaires. These sensors record information about traffic, including the presence of barriers, stopped vehicles, and vehicles travelling in the wrong direction.

The data is analysed by the control unit, which dynamically adjusts the lighting. The LED lights can change colour and intensity to indicate different traffic situations:

● a section with an anomaly on the road. A flashing or steady yellow light to warn drivers to be careful;
● wrong direction of travel. Red light to clearly indicate a hazard and prevent head-on collisions.

Given the positive results already achieved during the experiment, it is planned to introduce ‘falling light’ on other Italian roads.

In order not to get lost on the roads of Italy, it is worthwhile to familiarise yourself with the peculiarities of the country's traffic rules in advance. Read more about traffic rules, toll roads and fines for breaking the rules here.

Also, every driver should remember that all vehicles with Ukrainian registration must have a valid Green Card insurance policy when entering Italy.

The Green Card is a mandatory international motor third party liability insurance policy that covers the costs of compensation for damage to life, health and property of third parties caused by an accident in Italy and other member countries of the international Green Card agreement.

It is better to buy insurance online because it is quick and easy. On the Visit Ukraine portal, you can take out a Green Card policy from a licensed insurer. Packages are available for different periods from 15 days to 1 year for cars and trucks, trailers and semi-trailers for trucks, as well as motorcycles and scooters.

Please note! For those Ukrainians who have travelled abroad in their own cars due to the war, it is advisable to research the laws and regulations of the country in which they are currently staying. You can find out which countries have mandatory vehicle registration and whether you need to undergo a technical inspection here.
