TruCAM radars are special devices used by the police on Ukrainian roads to control the speed of vehicles. The measurement is performed using a laser, which guarantees accuracy and no error. Under what conditions is it legal to use TruCAM, how do the devices work and where are they located on Ukrainian roads - we will tell you further in the article.

TruCAM radars: how do the devices work?

TruCAM is capable of detecting vehicles at a distance of up to 1.2 km in any direction of movement. The radar captures up to 3 frames per second, and at a distance of 70 metres, it provides clear photo and video recordings of the violation, identifying the vehicle, licence plate and driver. During the speed measurement, the violator is marked with a red cross in the laser sight, which simplifies the process of fixing.

The radar software automatically adjusts the correction factor, eliminating the possibility of manipulation by the operator.

TruCAM radars are used in conjunction with automatic fixation cameras to increase the efficiency of measurement methods.

Can police officers hold TruCAM in their hands?

No, because according to Article 40 of the Law of Ukraine ‘On the National Police’, TruCAM must be fixed to a fixed object to avoid incorrect speed measurement. Any slight movement or oscillation of the device causes an error in fixation, and therefore such data can be considered incorrect.

Under what conditions is a speeding fine detected by TruCAM legal?

● the device is mounted on a fixed object;

● the device has passed state verification and has a corresponding expert opinion;

● the device has an intact seal;

● on the road section where the speed is recorded by TruCAM, there is a corresponding sign informing the driver of the violation;

● a Patrol Police vehicle with blue flashing lights is parked in the places where violations are recorded.

If one of these conditions is violated, the fine is illegal.

Location of TruCAM on the roads of Ukraine

The areas where TruCAMs are deployed are selected according to the concentration of speeding accidents.

Recently, the Patrol Police of Ukraine announced a change in the number of TruCAM radars on Ukrainian roads. In total, prior to these changes, the devices recorded violations at 333 sites.

Taking into account the martial law and the results of the analysis, the following changes have been made to the existing 333 sites:

● 17 new sites were added;

● changes were made to 3 sites;

● 1 site was removed from the list;

● work on 54 sections was suspended.

In total, 160 TruCAM devices are currently operating on Ukrainian roads, and measurements will be carried out on 295 road sections.
