Ukrainians migrate massively within Europe: where they move more often and why
Ukrainian refugees have started to migrate more inside Europe. Some countries have already felt a significant outflow of migrants. Find out what is the reason for mass migration of Ukrainians and where they are most often travelling to
During the two and a half years of war, millions of Ukrainians have travelled to the European Union as refugees. At first, most of them moved to neighbouring countries, while some decided to move to more highly developed countries. However, years later, the situation has changed somewhat, and Ukrainian citizens have had to look for more favourable options for their country of residence, given the difficult situation with finances and integration problems.
With reference to the research of the EWL platform and the Centre for Eastern European Studios of the University of Warsaw, which is published by PAP, we tell you where Ukrainians have recently migrated to and what motivated them to do so.
Where do Ukrainians leave most often?
Italy has faced a massive outflow of Ukrainian refugees. During the last year, 18,125 Ukrainians left the country due to bureaucratic difficulties, which is 11.2% of the total number of Ukrainian refugees in Italy.
Also mass migration of Ukrainians is noticed from Poland. But in this case most of them choose Germany as a further place of residence.
Recently, more than 350 thousand Ukrainians have left Poland in favour of Germany.

What are the reasons for intra-European migration of Ukrainians?
Sociologists, having conducted a survey, came to the conclusion that there are several reasons. For example, they take the situation with the move of Ukrainian citizens from Poland to Germany. So:
- Social benefits: Germany has more attractive social benefits for Ukrainians.
- Social ties: Many Ukrainians move to friends and acquaintances who have already settled in Germany.
- Financial benefit: After paying all the costs of staying in Germany there is more money left than in Poland.
- Work: It was possible to find a job with a higher salary in Germany.
- Security: Ukrainian refugees are able to feel really secure in Germany.
Margarita Sytnik, spokeswoman for the analytical platform EWL, notes that almost 59 per cent of Ukrainian refugees who could not find work in Poland have moved to Germany. Of these, already every third has found a job in Germany.
The Institute of Sociology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine confirms that initially many Ukrainians went to Poland because of proximity, language and cultural ties. Over time, however, they started to look for opportunities in other countries, finding it difficult to find a job in Poland. In Germany, Ukrainian refugees can expect more social support, which plays an important role in their lives.
Thus, the migration of Ukrainian refugees from Poland to Germany is driven by a number of factors, among which social support and job opportunities are key.
