Requirements for child car seats have changed in European countries: what do Ukrainian drivers need to know?
According to the current legislation, children under 150 cm in height must be transported in special car seats. The main criterion for classifying car seats was the child's weight, but recent studies have shown that this classification is not effective. Find out about the new requirements for transporting children in car seats in the European Union
As of 1 September, new requirements for transporting children in car seats came into force in the European Union. From now on, such a seat must have a special permit - R129/i-Size, and the main criterion for dividing between types of seats will be the child's height (maximum 150 cm). At the same time, the use of seats that have the previous types of permits remains in question. Read more about the new requirements for drivers in this article.
What innovations await car owners who use car seats?
Starting from 1 September 2024, car seats in cars in the EU must comply with EU or UNECE standards. R129/i-Size was adopted in 2013 and will now become common to all EU countries. According to the Road Traffic Act, children up to 150 cm tall are to be transported in car seats. There are 4 types of seats, and children will be allocated between them according to their height.
The new permit is called R129/i-Size and stipulates that the car seat must have a sticker in a visible place indicating that it has been approved.
Please note: If there is no such sticker or if the approval was not carried out in an EU country, the permit is not valid.

What permits for the use of car seats existed before?
Until 1 September this year, Europe had permits ECE R44/04 and ECE R44/03, adopted in the 70s of the last century, which took into account the weight of children when distributing them between different types of car seats. These standards are outdated. In addition, the number of cases when a child had the required weight but outgrew the car seat has recently increased. Accordingly, the new criteria provide for a distribution by height rather than weight. In addition, the seats will provide additional protection for the child's neck and head. Using a car seat reduces the risk of injury by 90% and the risk of death by 75%.
Attention: The sale of car seats that have not received the R129/i-Size approval is strictly prohibited.
The ECE R44/04 and ECE R44/03 approvals are no longer valid.
