The Kyiv Cave Monastery has launched a new kind of excursion: what is the point and how to visit it
The Kyiv Pechersk Lavra is opening a new type of tour for its guests. Among the novelties are a remote tour and a quest mission. Find out what this tour is all about and how to use it
The Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, which is one of the main attractions not only in Kyiv but also in Ukraine, is launching virtual quest missions. With reference to RBC-Ukraine Travel, we tell you what they are and how to visit them.
What are quest missions at the Kyiv Cave Monastery?
The idea is to allow anyone to visit the complex from anywhere in the world. All you need is a smartphone with the Internet.
Virtual quest missions are interactive tours developed using virtual and augmented reality and accompanied by audio.
You can choose a route to explore right on your phone. Each of them introduces the personalities who influenced the development of the Lavra. For example, in the route ‘History of the Lavra: St Theodosius of the Caves and Vera’ you can explore the era of princely times (XI-XIV centuries).
In each of the routes, you can listen to the first-person narration of four different guides, who are the most historical figures. Depending on the tour you choose, you will be guided by Nestor the Chronicler, Theodosius of the Caves, and others.
The quest is also available directly on the territory of the Lavra itself. In this case, it offers the presence of a virtual guide.
In total, there are three different QR codes, each of which offers a tour in Ukrainian or English, as well as an adaptive inclusive route that was developed for those who want to visit the historical location remotely. It is distinguished by the fact that it does not require personal presence at the Lavra.
What is the point of the quest tour?
Visitors need to ‘close’ seven points that will appear on the map. It will be especially interesting for children who like to look for something new, explore the area and see some new sights.
After each part of the audio guide, be prepared to answer questions: points are awarded for correct answers, and points are deducted for incorrect ones. During the tour, guests are asked to pay attention to certain architectural details or find an interesting image, for example, on a wall.
How to start a quest tour of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra?
Those wishing to take part in the quest mission need to download the FreeGenGo app, which is available both on the App Store and Google Play.
In the app, users can choose the period they are interested in. The routes available are: Faith, Will, Mind, and Creativity.
There is also an option to scan a QR code directly on the territory of the Kyiv Cave Monastery: this will allow you to start a journey with a guide in virtual space.
At the same time, we would like to note that when you come to Kyiv, you should visit this object of Ukrainian culture in person. In the Lavra, you can see several museums and ancient caves at once. You can take a guided tour of the Pechersk Lavra with Visit Ukraine.
