The city of Jihlava in the Czech Republic plans to engage Ukrainians to work as crime prevention assistants. The decision was made at a meeting of the city council, as reported by the mayor of Jihlava, Petr Ryška, Czech Radio reports.

The new initiative is aimed at strengthening police cooperation with the large Ukrainian diaspora living in the city and increasing trust in law enforcement.

What do you know about the position of a police support assistant?

Jihlava already has a programme with four assistants from the Roma community. Now the city wants to supplement their team with two Ukrainian assistants. According to the mayor, this measure is necessary because there are difficulties in the city, where about 7,000 Ukrainians live, that require a special approach.

The assistants will help the police maintain order, communicate with residents and promote compliance with the law. This may include preventive conversations and outreach to the diaspora.

Preparing to launch the programme

Jihlava plans to apply for funding for new assistants. If suitable candidates are found, they will be able to take up their duties as early as next spring. The mayor noted that the main criteria for selecting candidates are their qualifications and ability to work effectively for the benefit of the community.

Currently, some other Czech cities already have assistants working with Ukrainian communities, which underlines the relevance and demand for this initiative.

Assistants are not police officers

Crime prevention assistants are not full-fledged police officers, but they play an important role in maintaining order. They work alongside police officers, act as mediators between law enforcement and the local community, and help resolve social and legal issues.

This initiative opens up new opportunities for Ukrainians in the Czech Republic, giving them a chance to become part of a system aimed at improving public life. At the same time, it demonstrates the readiness of local authorities to cooperate with the diaspora and strengthen mutual understanding.
