Joint customs and border control between Ukraine and the EU is to be introduced in the near future. Poland will be the first partner, and the new system will simplify border crossing for citizens and businesses, improve security, and accelerate European integration. Find out how it will work and what changes are planned by 2030
Ukraine continues to strengthen cooperation with the European Union as part of its European integration. One of the key initiatives is the introduction of joint customs and border control with the EU countries.
Here's what we know about this important step, which aims to simplify procedures for citizens and businesses, as well as to strengthen border security.
Joint border control: how Ukraine is integrating into the EU system
The first agreement with Poland
Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal said that Poland would be the first country with which an agreement could be signed. Negotiations are currently underway, and the European Commission is already evaluating the potential agreement.
According to Shmyhal, once the technical issues are agreed upon, the model of joint control with Poland can be used to implement a similar system with other EU neighbors, such as Slovakia, Romania and Hungary.
“We expect the first results this year,” the Prime Minister said.
Expanding the eCherha system
In parallel with preparations for the introduction of joint control, Ukraine continues to improve its existing border crossing mechanisms. Shmyhal emphasized the importance of the eCherha system, which has facilitated nearly 1.6 million border crossings in two years.
Every day, thousands of trucks and buses use this system, which reduces the time spent at the border.

Modernization of checkpoints
In 2023, the government approved the Strategy for the Development of Border Infrastructure with the EU and Moldova until 2030. It provides for the reconstruction of 28 checkpoints and the construction of at least six new ones. This will create a modern and efficient infrastructure that meets European standards.
What is joint customs and border control?
Joint customs and border control involves cooperation between neighboring countries, where control is carried out simultaneously by the services of both countries at one checkpoint. This allows to:
- Reduce the time for checking documents and vehicles.
- Optimize border crossing procedures.
- Strengthen the interaction of services, including the exchange of information and technology.
- Reduce queues, which is a key benefit for citizens and businesses.
Significance for Ukraine's European integration
The introduction of joint customs and border control with the EU will be an important step towards Ukraine's integration into the European community. This will not only simplify the lives of citizens and entrepreneurs, but will also contribute to economic development, strengthen ties with neighboring countries, and improve security in the region.
