As we reported earlier, Germany has tightened border controls. The federal police are currently checking immigrants from all countries, which has led to catastrophic delays and kilometre-long queues. Why did Germany introduce strict border controls?

The German government cites two main reasons for tightening border controls:

1. The need to reduce the flow of illegal migration.

2. The need to prevent an epidemic of foot-and-mouth disease (the virus was first detected in the country in 37 years 70 km from the border with Poland in the federal state of Brandenburg).
