Austria is one of the most beautiful countries in Europe, which attracts tourists with its architecture, extraordinary art monuments, world-famous museums and cafes. Anyone who has traveled to this extraordinary country will confirm that it is incredible, but at the same time it is difficult to call it cheap.

Living in the heart of Europe, enjoying a leisurely pace of life, is everyone's dream. How much will it cost to live in Austria in 2023, we will tell below.

Pay attention! The material shows average prices for Vienna, which is one of the most expensive cities in the country.

An average family of two adults and two children needs about €3,000 per month, excluding rent.

Apartment rent and utilities

Not every local resident can buy an apartment in the Austrian capital. Therefore, foreigners who want to live in Vienna will first rent accommodation.

The cost of a one-room apartment in the city center is about €900, in the suburbs - from €650. Larger apartments, such as a three-room apartment, will cost between €1,100 and €1,400, depending on the area.

In addition to rent, you need to pay for utilities. In 2023, the approximate cost is as follows:

• Electricity, heating, water, waste removal – 250 €

• Mobile communication – 10-20 €

• Internet – 30-40 €

Prices for products in Austria

The cost of products in the country also meets the high standards of European life. Although food is more expensive than in Ukraine, it is cheaper to cook at home than to eat in cafes or restaurants. Average prices for basic products are as follows:

• Milk – 1.25 €

• Bread – 2 €

• Eggs (12 pcs.) – €3.50

• Chicken fillet – €11

• Hard cheese – €13

• A bottle of wine – €7

• Potatoes – €1.60

• Apples – €2

Since Vienna is full of tourists, restaurants charge high prices. You can have lunch in an inexpensive cafe for €14, in a fast food restaurant for €8, and you can drink coffee for €3-4.

Prices for travel by public transport

Public transport is very developed in all major cities of Austria. Trams, subways and electric trains are especially popular.

A one-time ticket in Vienna costs €2.40, but to save money, we recommend buying a weekly pass for €17.10. Read more about the types of tickets in Vienna and the possibility of free travel for Ukrainians at the link.

For car owners, we note that the cost of 1 liter of gasoline is about €2.

Sports and entertainment

In Austria, you will find activities to suit your taste and wallet. A monthly subscription to the fitness center costs about €40, tennis court rental for an hour from €20, a ticket to the cinema – from €8.

We recommend that you familiarize yourself with the offers and discounts available to holders of the Vienna City Card. You can save a lot by using this card.

The cost of education

School education in Austria consists of two stages: primary (4 years) and basic (5 or 8 years). Education in public schools is free, but in private schools it can reach 700 € per year.

Regarding preschool education: you can choose between municipal and private kindergartens, children's groups, extended day groups and babysitters. For more information about places in kindergartens for Ukrainians, see the link.

State medical services

Ukrainians in Austria can get a free consultation from a general practitioner who has a contract with the Austrian health fund. It is he who will conduct an initial examination and, if necessary, refer to a specialized specialist. Medical care is also provided in dispensaries and hospitals.

If you plan to live in Vienna, you must take out insurance. Refugees from Ukraine are issued an insurance number if they are registered with the police and receive assistance from the state (Grundversorgung). Read more about the Austrian medical system on the StartWien website.

We will remind you! Earlier, the Austrian authorities adopted a decision that allows Ukrainians to legally stay in the country until March 2024. Find out how to enter the country and where to look for housing and work in Austria at the link.
