The Japanese foundation "The Matsumae International Foundation" (MIF) announced the provision of grants to foreign researchers in 2024. Scientists who meet all the requirements can submit their own candidacy. Read more about how to get funds.


What does the Japanese foundation The Matsumae International Foundation offer to the winners?


The scholarship from "The Matsumae International Foundation" is intended to cover living expenses and research activities in Japan. It is forbidden to use it for other purposes. Winners will receive:


• 220,000 yen monthly;

• 120,000 yen to cover the primary costs of living in the country;

• Payment for a two-way flight;

• Health and life insurance;

• A trip to Japan to deepen knowledge about the country;


Pay attention! The Foundation will select 10 winners who will be able to conduct their own research for six months from April 2024 to March 2025. You can specify a period convenient for you.


The names of the winners will be announced in November 2023.


Requirements for candidates


• Not have Japanese citizenship or ancestry;

• Before applying, you need to receive an invitation from the university or research institution where you will work;

• Obtain a doctoral degree;

• Be younger than 50 years old at the time of application;

• Know English or Japanese at a sufficient level;

• Do not have long-term experience of staying in Japan (tourist visits or business trips are allowed);

• Be a specialist in your home country to return to after completing the scholarship program.


What areas can be explored?


Natural sciences, engineering and medicine are priority disciplines.


How to apply and qualify for a grant from The Matsumae International Foundation (MIF) in Japan?


Applicants should send their application to the fund at [email protected].

Pay attention! All documents must be in English and in PDF format.


In particular, prepare the following documents:

- Completed application. It is important to add a photo taken within the last three months;

- A research plan containing the content and purpose, a project map and a description of the benefits of the research for your country;

- Summary and list of publications;

- A letter of recommendation from your institution or employer confirming your academic abilities and achievements;

- Electronic copies of academic certificates/diplomas of Doctor of Philosophy, Master's and Bachelor's degrees. If these documents are in Ukrainian, they must be translated into English;

- Letter of invitation from the institution that will host you in Japan. Such a letter should contain confirmation of readiness to provide you with research accommodation and arrange your accommodation. The letter must be written on the official letterhead of the institution.


Attention! The application period will last from 04/01/2023 to 06/30/2023.


The MIF committee will review all entries and select winners based on the academic merit and degree of excellence of the research projects.
