Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, Slovakia has granted temporary protection status to more than 100,000 Ukrainians and is among the top ten countries that have received the largest number of refugees. Also in March 2023, Slovakia extended the temporary protection for Ukrainians. Refugees received housing, jobs and social guarantees in the country.

However, as the war continues, Ukrainians need to temporarily return to Ukraine to visit relatives, draw up documents, pack their belongings, etc.

In addition, there are now foreign citizens who are planning to come to Ukraine from Slovakia. Regardless of the purpose of the visit, anyone can travel to Ukraine.

It should be noted that over 31 thousand tourists from Slovakia visited Ukraine in the first half of 2023.

How to get from Slovakia to Ukraine?

Ukraine shares a border with Slovakia, and the Slovak-Ukrainian border has five checkpoints - two road, two rail, and one pedestrian:

- Uzhhorod - Vysne Nemecke (automobile);

 -Ubl'a - Maly Berezny (Automobile);

- Matyovtse - Uzhhorod (Railway);

Therefore, the easiest way to get from Slovakia to Ukraine is by train, bus or car.

 By train

Ukraine has resumed railway communication with Slovakia on the route Mukachevo - Chop - Cierna nad Tisou - Kosice.

Two trains run daily:

- Train No. 960/961 Kosice - Mukachevo: departure from Kosice at 8:46, arrival in Mukachevo at 14:00. In the opposite direction, from Mukachevo, the train will depart at 14:48 and arrive in Kosice at 18:17.

Both trains will pass through Chop station: in the direction of Mukachevo - at 12:00 and 14:51, in the direction of Kosice - at 16:13 and 19:26.

In Chop, passengers can transfer to trains to other cities of Ukraine: Kyiv, Kharkiv, etc.

The ticket price starts from 363 UAH.

• By bus

Slovakia has bus connections with many cities in Ukraine: Kyiv, Lviv, Poltava, Rivne, Uzhhorod, Kharkiv, etc. Many international bus companies operate flights between the countries. For example, a ticket for a direct flight from Flixbus on the route Bratislava-Kyiv costs from 2300 hryvnias, with a travel time of about 26 hours. You can book a ticket on the company's official website. Some carriers also offer connecting routes.

Can refugees temporarily leave Slovakia for Ukraine?

The temporary protection status granted to you in Slovakia does not restrict your right to travel to Ukraine. Traveling to your home country does not lead to the revocation of your temporary protection status. Upon your return, you will continue to be entitled to the same benefits.

However, if you live in social housing, receive financial assistance, etc., we recommend that you notify the social authorities of your temporary absence before traveling.

We remind you! Many foreign citizens came to Ukraine on the eve of holidays. However, due to the martial law, security measures in the country have been tightened, and checkpoints may be encountered on the roads. Read more about the rules for driving through checkpoints in our material.
