NATO Summit in Vilnius: What Ukraine should expect and what steps should be taken to join the Alliance
Ukraine's membership in NATO has been the subject of heated debate for years. Find out more about the statement made by the NATO Secretary General after Zelenskyy's visit and whether Ukraine will join the Alliance
Volodymyr Zelenskyy's recent visits to Italy, the Vatican, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom were preceded by many important decisions regarding military and financial support for Ukraine. In addition, they discussed the country's future, including its accession to NATO.
What does the NATO Secretary General say about Ukraine's membership in the Alliance?
According to Jens Stoltenberg, NATO's position has not changed, and Ukraine will become a member of the Alliance despite russia's reckless nuclear policy. However, the issue of preserving the country's sovereignty and independence is currently relevant.
In addition, the Secretary General noted that he could not name a specific date today, but the Alliance would do everything possible to ensure Ukraine's victory in the war. Therefore, the destruction of the russian army will be the starting point for NATO membership.
What does Ukraine need to join NATO?
Firstly, we are talking about the end of hostilities, because it is impossible to secure membership in the Alliance during the war. However, there are already some steps that will help Ukraine join NATO in the future.
Thus, according to experts, during the NATO summit to be held in July this year in Vilnius, a program of assistance will be presented to help Ukraine transition from Soviet standards, equipment and doctrines to NATO models.
In addition, joining the Alliance is a much faster process than joining the EU, as there is no need to adapt legislation, unify markets, etc. Therefore, it is expected that the summit will announce the final answer to the strategic question of geopolitical importance - whether Ukraine will receive an invitation to join NATO or not.
It is also important that if this does not happen, it will have serious negative consequences for the long-term security of the whole of Europe. After all, the Alliance's refusal would indicate that putin still has the right to veto NATO's expansion. This, in turn, will again lead to armed aggression on the European continent.

What do opponents of Ukraine's accession to NATO say?
Today, there are three main arguments of skeptics who oppose Ukraine's invitation to join the Alliance:
● Ukraine will not strengthen NATO, but will only lead to the destruction of Western unity;
● accession will serve as a basis for putin's hysteria that russia is surrounded by enemies and will help him further mobilize russian citizens in support of armed aggression;
● an invitation during the summit would immediately mean the use of Article 5.
All three narratives promoted by opponents of Ukraine's accession to NATO have some basis in fact, but are easily refuted, because:
1. Ukraine's membership is an opportunity to ensure peace on the European continent and strengthen the Alliance's military capabilities. NATO was created to counter the expansion of the USSR in Europe, and Ukraine is now fighting alone to achieve this goal. In addition, the country's military potential far exceeds NATO standards, and this has been proven directly on the battlefield.
2. An invitation to join the Alliance would be a loud signal to the russian people and authorities that there will be no more empire, and Ukraine is beyond their reach and influence. And NATO's charter prohibits attacks on any country, which means that russia is not under any threat. In addition, this is the reason why putin did not object to Sweden and Finland joining the Alliance.
3. Ukraine's accession to NATO does not oblige member states to go to war, because Article 5 will come into force only after a complete victory over russia.
Therefore, we hope that the members of the North Atlantic Alliance will make the right decision in July this year and prove that all previous statements were not unfounded.
