Massive missile attacks: how Ukraine is surviving the attacks and which cities are suffering the most
Ukrainian towns and villages have been under constant russian missile attacks for nearly a year and a half. Learn more about where the alarms are most often howled and which localities are most often affected by the attacks
From the very first day of the full-scale war unleashed by russia against Ukraine, our cities have been facing massive missile and drone attacks. In this article, we will tell you how many attacks Ukrainians have experienced since the beginning of the war and which cities have suffered the most.
In which Ukrainian cities are air raids most often announced?
Since the beginning of the full-scale war, according to the Alerts monitoring portal, more than 20,000 air raids have been sounded in Ukrainian cities. When it comes to the duration of air threats, the following regions (excluding the occupied territories) are at the top of the list:
- Donetsk region (74 days 23 hours 26 minutes);
- Kharkiv region (74 days 4 hours 37 minutes);
- Zaporizhzhia region (63 days 15 hours 22 minutes);
- Dnipropetrovska oblast (55 days 23 hours 17 minutes);
- Mykolaiv region (50 days 18 hours 11 minutes);
- Poltava region (39 days 21 hours 54 minutes);
- Sumy region (39 days 21 hours 54 minutes).
In the Ukrainian capital, during the entire period of the full-scale invasion of russia, the alarm was raised more than 760 times. The total duration of these alarms is 35 days 17 hours 58 minutes.
Ukrainian cities most often shelled by the occupiers
It is worth noting that there are no accurate statistics on shelling, but it is possible to calculate the sounds of explosions in the regions.
For example, according to media reports, there have been 1666 explosions in Kherson region since the beginning of the war. Given the intensity with which the russians are shelling Kherson and villages in the area, there may actually be many more explosions in this region.
Donetsk region is also under constant shelling, where the front line is located today. Thousands of explosions can be heard in the region per day, which can be caused by various types of weapons. A similar situation is observed in Zaporizhzhia and Kharkiv regions, as active hostilities are also taking place in these regions.
Sumy and Chernihiv regions, which border on russia, are also among the most heavily shelled areas of Ukraine. There are daily reports of air strikes and artillery attacks.
The city of Kyiv also suffers from constant aerial bombardment. In May 2023 alone, the occupiers attacked the capital more than 15 times, using cruise and ballistic missiles, as well as kamikaze drones.

Damage from russian strikes on Ukraine
In terms of the overall figure, the russian invasion of Ukraine has so far caused the country $143.8 billion in losses, said Yuriy Aristov, deputy chairman of the National Security, Defense, and Intelligence Committee of Ukraine, citing estimates by the Kyiv School of Economics.
He notes that these are only direct and documented material losses.
At the same time, it is already known that the largest share of losses falls on residential buildings ($53.6 billion, or 37.3%) and infrastructure ($36.2 billion, or 25.2%).
How do Ukrainians deal with air raids?
Missile strikes and air attacks are, unfortunately, a commonplace for many Ukrainians. Some citizens survive the attacks in shelters, while others ignore the threat and wait out the attacks in their homes/apartments, which is clearly dangerous for their lives.
It is worth noting that many russian attacks on Ukraine take place at night, which, of course, complicates the likelihood of a timely response to the air threat.
However, despite all this, Ukrainian citizens continue to believe in the air defense forces and live a full life.
