The whole world is supporting the affected Ukrainians as a result of the occupiers' explosion of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station. Find out more about which organisations provide financial and social assistance to residents of the Kherson region
The explosion of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station united millions of Ukrainians. Citizens have started to actively donate to support the victims both financially and with necessary items. Here are the organisations that provide financial support to the affected Ukrainians.
Financial benefits for residents of Kherson region: how to get them
The Danish Refugee Council (DRC) will provide financial assistance to people evacuating from the Kherson region because of the dam explosion. DRC also organises free legal consultations at registration points.
How can I get money from the DRC?
Registration for the payment is already open and takes place in Mykolaiv at the railway and bus stations until 17:00. It is easy to recognise the staff of the Danish Council as they wear vests with the logo.
To register, you need to have a passport and an individual tax number.
- The government also plans to support the victims with financial assistance. This intention was discussed during an extraordinary meeting of the Coordination Headquarters for the evacuation of the population under martial law.
Those evacuating from the region will be paid UAH 2,000 for an adult and UAH 3,000 for a child or a person with a disability. Details on how to receive it will be announced later.
Foundations and organisations supporting Kherson residents
1. USAID Ukraine
Since the first hours after the tragedy, the organisation has rallied its resources to evacuate people and provide them with humanitarian aid. USAID is working together with the Kherson Oblast and City Administrations, the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, the Ministry of Reconstruction of Ukraine, and other non-governmental agencies.
The organisation will provide more than UAH 22.5 million in assistance to affected households. In addition, more than 14,000 people have been provided with drinking water and 7,000 meals have been distributed in the Kherson and Dnipro regions.
Evacuation was also a key area of assistance. Under the leadership of the government, USAID organised buses and boats for rescue operations.
2. Assistance from the UK government
The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) is allocating £16 million to help Ukrainians affected by the Kakhovka dam. This amount will be distributed among the Red Cross Movement, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs and the International Organization for Migration. FCDO will also send boats, water filters, pumps and waterproof overalls to the Kherson region.
3. United24 helps rescuers
The fundraising platform has initiated a collection to support rescuers who are overcoming the consequences of the hydroelectric power plant explosion. The funds raised will be used to purchase boats, lights, motor pumps, wetsuits, underwater drones and other equipment. This equipment will allow, among other things, to detect and defuse explosive devices and mines that have been carried by the current to flooded cities.
You can join the collection here.
4. The "Gurkit Charitable Foundation" helps the victims
One of the foundation's activities is to support the de-occupied communities of the Kherson region. It is not surprising that the foundation has launched a collection for the victims. Everyone can join the collection to contribute to the purchase of drinking water, water filters, pumps and hoses.

5. The Rescue Now Foundation saves the people of Kherson
Volunteers of the Kharkiv-based foundation are actively helping the people of Kherson. Ukrainians have already donated more than UAH 14 million to provide humanitarian aid. Volunteers are expecting to deliver more than 7 tonnes of aid, including 192 sets of dishes and bed linen, 216 hygiene kits, 40 animal carriers and 200 kg of food.
6. The "Near" project of the Ukrainian Volunteer Service
This project raises funds to be transferred to volunteers in the occupied cities. They will buy basic food and supplies and distribute them to vulnerable people.
7. Volunteers of the Kyiv Tails Foundation evacuate animals
Representatives of the foundation take animals out of dangerous places and look for overnight accommodation for them. Therefore, they desperately need carriers and food. You can read more details and apply for evacuation here.
It would be impossible to tell you about all the volunteer organisations that are helping the people of Kherson. After all, the common disaster has once again united Ukrainians and shown the whole world how a strong spirit can withstand evil. Support proven charities and help your fellow countrymen in need.
The Visit Ukraine team has also launched an urgent collection to support the affected animals. You can make a donation to support defenceless four-legged friends by following the link. Your donations will help organisations that are urgently addressing the issue of helping furry animals.
