The election campaign of representatives of the Democratic, Republican, and independent parties continues in the United States. The largest margin of victory among Democrats is still held by incumbent US President Joe Biden. At the same time, former President Donald Trump remains in the lead among Republicans, despite the charges and the threat of imprisonment. We have already discussed in more detail how Trump's return to power could change the course of the war in Ukraine here. Today, we will talk about the position of the other candidates for the US presidency on supporting Ukraine.

On August 3, NBC reported that former US President Barack Obama had promised Biden that he would "do everything possible to get him re-elected."

Who is running for the US presidency in 2024?

According to The New York Times, 16 candidates are running for the US presidency in 2024, including: 3 Democrats (including current US President Joe Biden), 12 Republicans, and 1 independent candidate. Most of them support Ukraine and are in favor of providing assistance, but there are also those who have made controversial comments about the russian invasion.

Do Republicans support Ukraine?

Most Republicans support Ukraine and believe that America should continue to provide military and financial assistance. This applies to both US citizens and the candidates themselves. And polls confirm this opinion. For example, according to a Harvard CAPS-Harris study, 53% of Trump's supporters support Ukraine, and 63% of those who voted for his main rival, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, support Ukraine.

At the same time, Nikki Haley remains the most prominent supporter of Ukraine among Republican candidates. She has repeatedly and harshly criticized the comments of other candidates for their ambiguous position on helping Ukraine.

"Ukraine's victory is in favor of our national security," said Halley. Republicans Mike Pence, Tim Scott, Chris Christie, and Asa Hutchinson share a similar position.

It is worth noting that regardless of the party represented by the US presidential candidate, according to a poll published by Reuters, the vast majority of Americans (about 70%) are more likely to support a candidate who will continue military assistance to Ukraine, as well as a candidate who supports the NATO alliance in the US presidential election.

Which US presidential candidates do not support Ukraine?

In fact, there are not many candidates who have taken a position against Ukraine, but some of their comments have caused waves of debate and criticism, both from the current government and among US citizens. So, which candidate supports the russian invasion?

Donald Trump

The former US president's policies have not changed since his term in office. And although recent polls show that Trump should change his rhetoric on Ukraine in order not to lose a significant part of voters, he continues to shock the world with his pro-putin sentiments and loud statements about "ending the war in 1 day."

Ron DeSantis

Despite the fact that Trump's main rival has not made such loud statements, DeSantis has been repeatedly accused of having ambiguous statements and position on Ukraine. In particular, DeSantis hopes for an end to the war and the end of hostilities by 2025, i.e. before the actual cadence of the next US president, and he considered the armed aggression of the russian federation a "territorial dispute" until he was publicly criticized for this position. Still, he publicly called putin a war criminal.

Robert F. Kennedy

The nephew of the 35th President of the United States, John F. Kennedy, is the only Democrat who actively promotes pro-russian narratives, in particular that Washington is waging a war against moscow at the hands of Kyiv. In addition, he constantly criticizes the policies of the current White House administration and argues that the decisions made by Joe Biden only lead to an "escalation" of the conflict. However, Kennedy has almost no supporters, and therefore his chances of becoming president of the United States are almost zero.

Vivek Ramaswamy

Ramaswamy completes the list as a businessman rather than an experienced diplomat or politician. He has not made any loud statements against Ukraine, but he has a rather ambiguous position. First, he says that russia should be repelled and lose, and then he emphasizes that the United States has already done everything possible to support Ukraine and has long fulfilled all the conditions of the Budapest Memorandum.
