For the Day of Partisan Glory in Ukraine, which is celebrated on September 22, it is important to remember and honor the heroic efforts of partisans who fought against Nazi occupation during World War II and are currently fighting for their country's independence against russia. We tell you about the main historical moments and facts related to the Ukrainian partisan movement, as well as modern partisan efforts.

As you know, partisans are those people who carry out sabotage activities in occupied territories, that is, behind enemy lines. Some of the guerrillas can direct and correct strikes against the enemy, and some can also carry out subversive activities themselves inside the enemy's location.

Historical moments and facts about the partisan movement in Ukraine

An active Ukrainian partisan movement appeared on the territory of the country during World War II, when Ukraine was divided between Nazi Germany and the troops of the Soviet Union.

At that time, partisan struggle appeared in a number of regions of Ukraine.

One of the most famous partisan movements was the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA). The UPA fought for the independence of Ukraine and fought against both the Nazis and the Soviets.

The partisans committed daring acts of sabotage, attacked military installations, and conducted reconnaissance. Their actions helped weaken the occupiers and maintained morale among the population.

During World War II, about 200,000 partisans operated behind Nazi lines in Ukrainian territories

Modern partisans

After the end of World War II, Soviet troops carried out mop-ups and liquidation of Ukrainian partisans. However, dozens of years later, partisan units reappeared on the territory of Ukraine.

After the beginning of the war in Donbass, Ukrainian citizens again began to conduct active sabotage activities in the rear of enemy troops. And since 2022, when russian troops invaded Ukraine, guerrilla movements only began to grow.

At the moment Ukrainian partisans are present in almost all occupied territories. They destroy the enemy from within, as well as help the Armed Forces of Ukraine with reconnaissance and adjusting strikes.

Famous partisans in the history of Ukraine

There are several personalities in Ukrainian history who deserve special attention, since they are the ones who actively fought for the independence of the country, destroying the enemy in the occupied territories.

One of them is Simon Petliura - the ataman of the Ukrainian People's Republic and anti-Bolshevik partisan units during the Civil War and intervention.

Also we cannot but remember Roman Shukhevych - UPA general, who was a prominent figure in the struggle for Ukrainian independence during World War II.

If we talk about modern partisans, it is impossible to single out one person, as all these people deserve gratitude and awards.

In addition, it is worth paying attention to the fact that many partisans are exactly female, and their participation in the fight for freedom is incredibly important and inspiring.

Day of Partisan Glory in Ukraine reminds of the heroism and selflessness of those who fought and continue to fight for the freedom and independence of the country, and this day calls to keep the memory of them in the hearts of future generations.
