Ukraine is forming a battalion exclusively of russians ready to fight against putin: what is known about it
The Ukrainian armed forces have created the "Siberia" battalion, which was formed from russians and representatives of ethnic minorities from the east of the russian federation. Read more about who the fighters of this formation are and why they decided to fight against russian terrorists
The Ukrainian Armed Forces are forming a battalion, which consists entirely of russian citizens and representatives of ethnic minorities in russia. These people have expressed their readiness to fight against dictator vladimir putin. We tell you how many people have already joined the battalion and how it differs from russian volunteer units.
The battalion has been given the name "Siberia" and unites russians who came to Ukraine through third countries to fight on the side of the AFU, according to Bloomberg.
What is known about the Siberia battalion?
Unlike volunteer groups such as the russian Freedom Legion that claim to support Ukraine, the Sibir Battalion is part of the regular Ukrainian army. They are expected to go to the front lines very soon.
The group of military personnel are now undergoing training near Kiev. The battalion is made up of Yakuts and Buryats, among others, who want independence for their territories in eastern Siberia from russia and believe that a Ukrainian victory in the war would be a step toward that goal.
"I want Yakutia to be a free democratic country, it is a very rich country, but the people are so poor. Only government officials who serve Putin are prospering," said one of the fighters.
The battalion also includes people from the Moscow region and from Moscow itself. These volunteers say they do not want to be complicit in evil and are ready to help Ukraine.
At the same time, Ukraine hopes to attract more russian citizens, primarily minorities, to the war against the russian dictator.
It is worth noting that all members of the 60-member battalion are volunteers, none of them recruited from russian prisoners of war. However, the Ukrainian Armed Forces now wants to speed up the loyalty test of the fighters, which could take up to a year, to encourage more russians to join the Ukrainian army.
The existence of the Sibir battalion was also confirmed by the secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, Oleksiy Danilov. As he noted, many representatives of russia are fighting on the side of Ukraine and in the near future "we will see more than one such battalion".
