More than half of new sole proprietorships in Ukraine were opened by women: details

Since the beginning of this year, women in Ukraine have founded 154 thousand new sole proprietorships and have been appointed as heads of more than 10 thousand new companies. The region with the highest rate of new women entrepreneurs is Khmelnytskyi, where women registered the largest number of new businesses.

Chernihiv and Poltava regions are among the regions where women are most likely to be appointed as directors of new companies.

According to OpenDataBot, starting in February 2023, every second new sole proprietorship in Ukraine was started by women, which indicates a significant increase in their representation in business. During this year, the share of female sole proprietors increased to 60%, up from 49% in 2021.

As of mid-November 2023, the number of new female sole proprietors exceeded the total number registered in all of 2021: 154,388 vs. 141,575.

It is worth noting that the total number of new sole proprietorships in 2023 already exceeds the figures for 2021, amounting to 274,859 vs. 262,933.

In Khmelnytskyi region, women have been opening more sole proprietorships than men for the second year in a row. However, in 2023, the number of women entrepreneurs starting new businesses increased in Poltava and Chernihiv regions.

The smallest share of female sole proprietors was found in the capital and on the front line in Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions.

In the area of company management, despite the rapid growth of women's entrepreneurship, the share of women among company executives is not growing as fast. During the first year of the full-scale war, the share of women directors dropped by almost five percentage points to 28%.

This year, the situation has stabilized, and the share of women directors has increased to 31%, returning to the levels of 2021. In total, 32.8 thousand new companies were opened in Ukraine during the year.

Women are most often the CEOs of newly established companies in Chernihiv, Chernivtsi, and Kirovohrad regions. At the same time, for the second year in a row, the lowest number of female directors is in Kyiv and the region, as well as in Poltava and Cherkasy regions.
