Finnish airline Finnair will cancel about 550 flights this week due to a labor union strike against the Finnish government scheduled for February 1 and 2. This is reported by Reuters.

Finnair cancels hundreds of flights due to large-scale strike: details

The carrier's statement reads: "The political strike will have a significant impact on the operation of Helsinki Airport and Finnair's flights."

The company also announced that they will be canceling flights on their systems one by one, starting Tuesday morning, January 30. Customers will be offered alternative routes.

In the past months, Finnish trade unions have protested against government plans to favor local labor agreements over centralized ones, limit political strikes, and simplify the termination of labor contracts.

Strikes in Europe: what are the problems?

In January, the German Railway Workers' Union (GDL) announced a new large-scale strike that paralyzed the country for six days. The railroad workers demanded better working conditions from the Deutsche Bahn railroad concern. A large-scale strike by railroad workers paralyzed Germany from January 24 to 29.

In addition, Ryanair CEO Michael O'Leary said earlier that airfares, especially in the summer of 2024, will be higher due to limited short-haul capacity in Europe. He also noted that low-cost airlines may face an insufficient number of aircraft this summer due to delays in the delivery of Boeing aircraft.
