US citizens in Ukraine: how many foreigners came in 2023?
The United States ranks 8th in the ranking of countries from which foreigners most often came in 2023. Find out how many Americans entered Ukraine last year and for what purpose
Despite the war, a large number of foreigners visit Ukraine, not only from neighboring countries but also from such distant parts of the world as Jamaica, Haiti, and Guatemala. In total, according to statistics provided by the State Border Guard Service at the request of Visit Ukraine, more than 2.4 million foreign citizens entered Ukraine in 2023. We will tell you how many of them are citizens of the US partner state in the article below.
How many Americans entered Ukraine?
In the ranking of countries from which foreigners most often came to Ukraine in 2023, the United States took 8th place. Thus, 50,374 foreigners entered the country in 12 months. By a small margin, the United States is ahead of Turkey (51,547) and Slovakia (58,317) in terms of the number of people who crossed the border. Germany (47,250) and the United Kingdom (29,349) are lower in the ranking.
However, it is worth noting that compared to pre-war 2021, the number of Americans visiting Ukraine has almost halved. Thus, according to the State Border Guard Service, 103 thousand foreigners entered the country in 2021, which corresponds to 9th place in the country ranking.
Why do US citizens travel to Ukraine?
According to the SBGS, the vast majority of foreigners came for private purposes and on the basis of a visa-free regime. In other words, they stayed in Ukraine for a limited time and entered, confirming the purpose of their trip with invitations to meetings, travel vouchers, event bookings, and business visits. It is worth noting that a significant number of foreigners are representatives of official delegations, journalists, reporters, and volunteers.
So, out of more than 50 thousand foreigners from the United States:
– 49,776 foreigners came for private purposes;
– 598 foreigners entered the territory of Ukraine in transit.

– Lviv;
– Odesa
– Kharkiv;

What does a US citizen need to enter Ukraine?
US citizens have the right to stay in Ukraine without a visa for up to 90 days if the purpose of the trip is tourism, visiting relatives, medical treatment, etc. This means that you do not need to apply for a visa for a short trip. Instead, a foreigner must have
– a valid passport
– confirmation of the purpose of the trip;
– proof of financial security for the duration of the stay in Ukraine;
– insurance policy (of a certain type).
Please note! It is impossible to enter Ukraine without an insurance policy, but foreign insurance will not work in the country due to the fact that martial law has been introduced in Ukraine. Therefore, insurance must be obtained from a Ukrainian insurer. In this case, we recommend that you take out insurance with war risk coverage, which will cover not only standard medical care/treatment/diagnosis, etc., but also accidents and injuries caused by passive or direct military risks.
You can take out such insurance on the Visit Ukraine website. Follow the link and choose an insurance policy with the appropriate coverage and indemnity amount for the required period. Read more about why a foreigner needs insurance to travel to Ukraine here.
It is also worth noting that in order to make a trip to Ukraine as comfortable and safe as possible, foreigners should familiarize themselves with the current restrictions and safety rules in advance.
