As you know, Ukrainians who are in Germany and have a car can use a Ukrainian driving licence for the duration of their temporary protection. However, what should Ukrainians who want to take the driving test in Germany for the first time do? We will tell you about the procedure for obtaining a driving licence in Germany, prices, how to choose a driving school and what to look for in this article.

How to choose a driving school in Germany?

First of all, it is worth collecting feedback from your friends in Germany who have already passed the driving test. Some driving schools offer prospective students a trial lesson to help them make their choice. We also advise you to choose a driving school based on the following facts:

● location of the driving school. For convenience, we recommend narrowing your search to schools that are close to your place of residence;
● the urgency of obtaining a driving licence. In Germany, there are driving schools that offer a fast-track course for urgent licence acquisition. However, keep in mind that classes at such schools last from morning to evening;

● the price of the lessons

● what kind of cars students learn to drive;
● the number of classes and groups in the school.

Documents for obtaining a driving licence in Germany

Before or during the theoretical part of the driving school, you need to collect documents. The school usually provides a list of required documents.

Documents required for the driving test:

● a mandatory eye test. This test can be taken by a doctor or in any optician's office. If the examination reveals that you have vision problems, you will not be allowed to take the practical part of the driving test without glasses or lenses;

● taking a first aid course. As a rule, the driving school will tell you where you can take these lessons;

● a statement of intent to obtain a driving licence. The relevant document should be submitted to the local authorities and two 3×4 photographs should be attached to it;

● four 3x4 photographs. Two photographs will be attached to the application for a driving licence, and the other two will be placed in the personal file of the driving school and the police.

Driving licence exams in Germany

Just like in Ukraine, to obtain a driving licence in Germany, you need to pass two exams - theoretical and practical.

Students take the theoretical exam after completing 14 hours of theoretical lessons at a driving school. Unfortunately, the theory test is not currently available in Ukrainian, but you can choose any of the following languages for testing: English, French, Greek, Arabic, Italian, Croatian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Spanish or Turkish. If the theoretical test is passed successfully, the future driver has 12 months to pass the practical test. However, if the student fails to pass the practical test within this period, he or she will need to retake the theory test.

Passing the practical test is only possible if you pass the theory test. The exam is administered by independent examiners. Unfortunately, the practical exam is conducted in German only. Occasionally, examiners may switch to English, but are not obliged to do so.

After passing both exams, the student is issued with a driving licence. If it is not yet ready, a temporary certificate may be issued, which must be submitted to the Driver Licensing Office.

Please note that all drivers in Germany who use a car with a foreign registration are required to have a valid Green Card insurance policy. The Green Card is a mandatory international motor third party liability insurance policy that covers the costs of compensation for damage to life, health and property of third parties caused by an accident in Germany and other member countries of the international Green Card agreement.

It is better to buy insurance online because it is quick and easy. On the Visit Ukraine portal, you can take out a Green Card policy from a licensed insurer. Packages are available for different periods from 15 days to 1 year for cars and trucks, trailers and semi-trailers for trucks, as well as motorcycles and scooters.

Just a reminder. The requirements for technical inspection and re-registration of cars with Ukrainian licence plates differ from country to country. Read more about therequirements for cars with Ukrainian registration here.
