The EU has extended the abolition of roaming fees for Ukrainians for another year. This was reported by the press service of the European Commission.
This is the fifth extension of a voluntary agreement between 22 European and seven Ukrainian operators to provide refugees from Ukraine with communications.
The agreement is made possible by the signatories, who have committed to mutually reduce their tariffs to connect calls across borders. According to European Commissioner for the Internal Market Thierry Breton, the fifth extension of the agreement is an example of European solidarity and a demonstration of fast and effective cooperation in times of great need.
"We look forward to welcoming Ukraine into the EU roaming area," Breton said.
Efficiency and support
The latest data provided by the Body of European Regulators for Electronic Communications (BEREC) shows that the agreement has been effective in providing affordable calls. Operators continue to offer free SIM cards to refugees, free international calls to Ukraine, and monthly packages that can be used in the host country. In addition to telecommunication services, operators provide smartphones, power banks and laptops to refugees or support charitable organizations.

Challenges for operators
According to the European Commission, despite the decline in incoming traffic, difficulties in maintaining the subscriber base and the need to invest in network restoration, Ukrainian operators continue to offer free or significantly reduced roaming services. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has already welcomed the extension of free roaming between the EU and Ukraine.
As you know, telecom operators in the EU and Ukraine signed a joint statement on their coordinated efforts to provide affordable or free roaming and international calls for the first time in April 2022.
We remind you! The European Union has officially decided to extend asylum for Ukrainian citizens. Read more about how long temporary protection in the EU countries will be valid now.
