The EU Council has officially approved the European Commission's proposal to extend the temporary protection mechanism for more than 4 million Ukrainians fleeing the war. This was reported by the press service of the EU Council.

EU extends temporary protection for Ukrainian refugees: details

It is noted that the temporary protection of Ukrainians in the European Union has been extended until March 4, 2026.

Belgian State Secretary for Asylum and Migration, Nicole de Moore, commented on the decision:

"russia terrorizes the Ukrainian people with bombings every day. It is dangerous. Those who have fled from russian aggression can continue to count on our solidarity," she said.

The EU Council also recalled that the temporary protection mechanism was launched on March 4, 2022, just a few days after russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Important! The decision does not change the provisions of March 2022 regarding the categories of persons covered by temporary protection.

Asylum provides immediate and collective protection to a large group of displaced persons who arrive in the EU and are unable to return to their country of origin. Persons enjoying this protection have the same rights throughout the EU.

In particular, these rights include:

  • • residence;
  • • access to the labor market and housing;
  • • medical care
  • • social assistance;
  • • access to education for children.

    We remind you!
     This year, many countries continue to open their doors to Ukrainian refugees, giving them the opportunity to find a new home and safety. Given the large number of displaced persons from Ukraine, the EU and other countries have developed support programmes to help Ukrainians integrate into new communities. Read more about where they offer good conditions for life and development.
