Car insurance in Poland: do Ukrainians need to take out a Polish policy?
Ukrainians who currently live in Poland and have their own car should know everything about the rules that apply to drivers. Find out more about compulsory car insurance in Poland and whether Ukrainians need to take out Polish insurance
All drivers in Poland have compulsory car insurance called Ubezpieczenie Odpowiedzialności Cywilnej. This insurance is identical to the usual car insurance for Ukrainians. The article below explains whether Ukrainians need to take out Polish insurance and whether there are other options.
Compulsory car insurance in Poland: what Ukrainians need to know
Ubezpieczenie Odpowiedzialności Cywilnej insurance is mandatory for all vehicles registered in Poland. Even if the car is in a garage and not in use, it must be insured. The compulsory policy covers damages to the victim in the event of an accident in Poland and operates similarly to the Ukrainian car insurance.
The rules for taking out insurance for foreigners in Poland do not change - residents of other countries can take out compulsory insurance for a car registered in Poland on the same rights as local residents.
Car insurance in Poland: price
The exact price of a Polish car insurance policy is calculated depending on a large number of factors. Some of them are:
● year of manufacture of the car;
● engine size;
● car model;
● number of previous owners of the car;
● region of registration;
● driving experience of the owner, etc.
Every year in Poland, there is a tendency for prices to rise regularly for Ubezpieczenie Odpowiedzialności Cywilnej. However, there is good news: drivers can get discounts for long driving experience, no accidents in the past, etc.
In 2024, the average price of civil liability insurance in Poland is PLN 610 (UAH 6,292) per year.
Keep in mind that Ubezpieczenie Odpowiedzialności Cywilnej must be issued on the day of vehicle registration. Otherwise, the car owner may face a fine.
The amount of the fine for not having compulsory insurance in Poland is calculated depending on the minimum wage. The maximum fine for a passenger car is the amount of the minimum wage multiplied by 2 and is calculated according to the period of delay. Thus, owners whose insurance has been overdue for 1 to 3 days will pay a fine of 20% of the maximum fine, for 4 to 14 days - 50% of the maximum fine, and for more than 14 days - the full maximum fine.

Insurance of a Ukrainian car in Poland: is it necessary to take out Polish insurance?
Remember that Ukrainians who plan to stay in Poland for more than 6 months must re-register their car. As we mentioned above, every registered car in Poland is subject to compulsory third-party liability insurance.
However, do Ukrainians need to take it out?
No, not if you have a valid Green Card insurance policy. The Green Card is an international insurance policy for motorists. If you have driven your own car out of Ukraine, you know that this policy is mandatory for crossing the border. However, it is also valid in Poland. The main thing is to keep track of the policy's validity period and renew it in time.
The insurance company compensates for damage that may be caused abroad by a car with a Green Card policy. It's important to remember that damage caused to third parties is covered, but the coverage does not apply to the person responsible for the accident. This means that if you hit someone else's car abroad, the insurance company will pay money to the other party to the accident, not you.
If you have a valid Green Card insurance policy, you do not need to take out additional Polish insurance. Remember that the Green Card is valid not only in Poland and Ukraine, but also in Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, so you will be under reliable insurance protection even when travelling to other countries.
How do I apply for a Green Card?
You can buy a Green Card both abroad and in Ukraine. However, insurance abroad will cost much more. For example, in Poland, the cost of a Green Card for 1 month is 50 euros.
Therefore, it is better to buy insurance online, because it is quick and easy. On the Visit Ukraine portal, you can take out a Green Card policy from a licensed insurer. The calculator allows you to calculate the exact price of the policy individually for your vehicle. Packages are available for different periods from 15 days to 1 year for cars and trucks, trailers and semi-trailers for trucks, as well as motorcycles and scooters.
Please note: For those Ukrainians who have travelled abroad in their own cars due to the war, it is advisable to research the laws and regulations of the country in which they are currently staying. You can find out which countries require mandatory vehicle registration and whether you need to undergo a technical inspection here.
