Many drivers prefer self-service car washes because of the significant time and cost savings they offer. Find out more about how to wash your car at a self-service car wash and avoid streaks
Caring for your car at a self-service car wash can save you a lot of time and money. To achieve the best results and wash your car properly without leaving stains, you should follow simple recommendations. Useful tips for drivers who are new to self-car washing are provided below.
How to wash your car at a self-service car wash: step-by-step instructions
First of all, you need to choose the right time, because it is best to wash the car in the shade when the body surface has already cooled down. Sunlight can cause detergents to dry quickly and leave streaks. Make sure you have change for payment, sponges or brushes for washing, and a soft microfibre cloth for drying.
Before washing, remove all debris, leaves and other foreign objects from the car. After completing the preparatory steps, you can proceed to the main wash:
● Pay the required amount of money at the special terminal and select the appropriate washing programme. Typically, programmes with different durations and functions are available.
● Pre-wash. First, thoroughly wet the entire car body with water. This will help soften dirt and dust. Keep in mind that the water is under high pressure, so keep the hose 30-40 centimetres away from the body.
● Basic wash. Select the appropriate option on the terminal that is responsible for the foam supply. Apply the foam to the entire body, including the wheels and the underside of the doors. Follow the instructions on the car wash for the duration of the foam (usually 2 to 10 minutes, depending on the degree of dirt on the vehicle).
● Washing with a sponge or brush. Gently wash the entire body, paying particular attention to soiled areas. Use soft sponges or brushes to avoid scratching.
● Rinse off the foam. Thoroughly rinse off the foam from all surfaces of the vehicle. Make sure that the water runs off evenly and does not leave any streaks. Keep in mind that to successfully rinse off the foam from the car, hold the hose at a 45-degree angle to the car.
● Cleaning the wheels. Often, self-service car wash terminals have an additional wheel washing function. Wash the wheels separately, including their metal parts.
● Drying. Some car washes have an automatic drying function with air flow. If not, use a soft microfibre cloth and dry the car yourself. Move in a circular motion to avoid streaks.
● Apply wax. If your terminal has a function for this, select it and apply wax to the surface of the vehicle. It serves as a so-called protection of the vehicle's paintwork.
