Pregnancy is a special period that requires increased attention, especially when traveling abroad. Travel insurance can be an important tool for protection, but it is important to understand what exactly it covers and what risks remain outside its scope.

Insurance for pregnant women: what you should know before traveling abroad

Traveling during pregnancy can be associated with additional risks that need to be taken into account. Travel insurance becomes an integral part of preparing for such a trip, as it not only covers medical expenses but also provides access to the necessary emergency medical care in case of unforeseen situations.

Is there a special policy for pregnant women?

There is travel insurance for pregnant women, but not as a separate special policy. Any health insurance for traveling abroad by default includes coverage for pregnancy up to 28 weeks. This is basic coverage that does not depend on the insurance program you choose.

What can the insurance cover?

Maternity insurance can cover unforeseen complications that arise while traveling. For example, if a pregnancy occurs after the policy is purchased and health problems arise that require medical attention, the insurance may provide compensation. However, this coverage often has limitations, so you need to read the terms of the agreement carefully and consult with the insurer for all the details.

If problems arise later in the pregnancy, the insurance company may consider the situation, but assistance will be provided only to the extent that the health of the mother, not the child, is maintained.

What services does the insurance cover?

If a pregnant woman's condition deteriorates abroad, insurance can cover the following services:

- Medical expenses related to pregnancy.

- Medical consultations, tests, hospitalization and treatment of complications.

- Emergency medical evacuation and transportation to the nearest medical facility.

- Emergency care.

However, exacerbation of existing diseases or pathologies is not covered by the policy.

Main types of insurance for pregnant women

There are several types of insurance coverage for pregnant women:

• Unexpected pregnancy. If the pregnancy occurs after the policy has been purchased, some plans may cover the cost of canceling the trip. To do this, you need to provide medical documents confirming that the pregnancy occurred after the date of purchase.

• Pregnancy without complications. Most insurance plans do not cover trip cancellation due to a normal pregnancy. The only exception is if the cancellation is necessary for medical reasons and is confirmed by a doctor.

• Childbirth. Traditional childbirth is not covered by travel insurance. This requires a separate specialized policy suitable for such cases. Even the maximum limit of 50,000 euros will not cover the costs of childbirth abroad. However, if complications arise during childbirth, the costs of emergency medical care may be covered.

Before traveling, pregnant women should carefully study the terms of their insurance policy and consult with the insurer for detailed information.

What if a pregnant woman becomes ill while traveling?

If a pregnant woman feels unwell while traveling, she should immediately contact the insurance company's assistant, whose contacts are specified in the contract. Calling an ambulance or going to the doctor without first notifying the assistance may not be covered by insurance.

If you cannot contact the assistant, try to see a doctor yourself, but be sure to coordinate this with the insurance company. Payment by checks is possible only if the country has not signed an agreement with a medical institution, although this is rarely the case in EU countries.

Actions in case of an insured event

If an insured event related to pregnancy occurs during the trip, you should immediately notify the insurance company by calling the number indicated in the policy. Be prepared to cover some expenses yourself, as not all insured events can be compensated.

How to take out a policy?

To purchase insurance, you will need:

• Passport and international passport.

• TIN.

• Travel information: number of tourists, purpose of the trip, dates and country.

• Additional coverage plans, if any (extreme sports, additional medical services, etc.).

The cost of the policy depends on the exchange rate, the number of coverages, the presence of a deductible, the number and age of tourists.
