Slovakia cuts aid for Ukrainian refugees: new rules from 2025

The Slovak authorities are preparing to significantly cut aid for Ukrainian refugees who arrive in the country after February 2025. The new rules will reduce the length of stay in shelters and financial support, but will not affect the most vulnerable categories of the population. How this will affect Ukrainians and why the government chose this step, read in our article

Slovakia has announced a significant reduction in aid for Ukrainian refugees arriving in the country after February 28, 2025. This was reported by the Slovak Spectator.

The government explains this decision by the need to reduce state budget expenditures, which will save about 2 million euros. At the same time, this step has been widely criticized by both opposition politicians and the public.

Main changes for Ukrainians in Slovakia

According to the new rules, which will come into force on March 1, 2025:

- Reduction of the period of stay in shelters. Ukrainians who receive refugee status after this date will be able to stay in asylum institutions for no more than 60 days, compared to the current 120 days.

- Reduction of financial assistance. The period of support for accommodation is also reduced to 60 days.

- Exceptions for vulnerable groups. The changes will not affect the most vulnerable categories of the population:

• pensioners over 65 years old,

• children under the age of 5,

• single guardians of children.

The reduction in assistance caused outrage among opposition MPs, who called the measures inappropriate and weakening support for those who need it most.

However, Deputy Interior Minister Peter Krauspe emphasized that “the country needs to save money wherever possible,” adding that Slovakia remains one of the most generous countries in supporting Ukrainian refugees.

Slovakia has long provided significant support to Ukrainians fleeing the war. However, the new rules may make life much more difficult for those who are only planning to seek refuge in the country. The reduction in the length of stay and assistance increases the importance of adaptation and job search for newcomers.

The government hopes that the innovations will stimulate faster integration of Ukrainians into society, but time will tell whether such measures will prove to be justified.
