Ukraine has begun to actively prepare for the New Year holidays, despite the martial law that has been in place for almost three years. Although Ukrainian cities have abandoned public celebrations of the New Year, they have decided to set up the main symbol of the holiday - the Christmas tree. Here's a look at what Christmas trees are decorating the biggest and most touristy cities in Ukraine this year.

Lviv🎄

The city's main Christmas tree was lit on 5 December, the eve of St Nicholas Day. The festive tree was decorated with illumination and an anti-tank ‘hedgehog’ was placed on top.

It is worth noting that the city received the Christmas tree as a gift from the Podvirnyi family from the village of Birky, Yavoriv district, and it is about 16 metres high.

Odesa🎄

The main Christmas tree of Odesa was lit on 6 December on the main street, Deribasovskaya.

The festive tree is 20 metres high and 9 metres wide. The top is decorated with a Christmas star. The tree was decorated with stylised elements of traditional Ukrainian ornamentation and a blue and yellow ribbon.

Ivano-Frankivsk🎄

Ivano-Frankivsk also hosted the grand opening of the Christmas tree. This year, it was decided to install it in a new location - in a park near the city lake.

The country's main Christmas tree in Kyiv🎄

The official opening of the country's main Christmas tree took place in Kyiv on 6 December. The tree was traditionally set up on St Sophia's Square. The opening took place at the expense of patrons, without any money from the budget.

This year, the country's main Christmas tree is 15 metres high. It is white, symbolising the beginning of a new, clean path, reminding us of the renewal that Christmas and the New Year bring. The tree is decorated with a 2 kilometre-long light blue garland and 2,000 turquoise ornaments.
