In today's world, where technology is blurring borders, more and more countries are opening their doors to digital nomads - professionals who work remotely and seek to combine their careers with travel.

Special visas for such professionals have become a real breakthrough in migration legislation, offering legal ways for long-term residence abroad. Currently, more than 50 countries offer such visa programmes, which have become especially relevant after the COVID-19 pandemic.

What opportunities does the digital nomad status open up and how to obtain the appropriate visa is described in the article below.

What does digital nomad status mean?

A digital nomad is a specialist who works remotely using modern technologies and has the freedom to choose a country of residence. The peculiarity of this status is that the employee is physically located in one country but provides services to companies or clients from other countries.

It is important to understand that most countries prohibit digital nomads from working with local companies, although there are exceptions - for example, in Spain, it is allowed to receive up to 20% of income from local customers.

Such visas may have different names in different countries: ‘freelancer visa’, “self-employed visa”, or be part of other programmes, such as in the Netherlands, where there is a residence permit for independent workers, or in France, where The Long Stay Visa programme operates.

Why do countries introduce visas for digital nomads?

Attracting digital nomads is of strategic importance for many countries. Such specialists usually have a high level of income, which they spend in the host country, stimulating the local economy. In addition, they contribute to the formation of professional communities, the development of digital infrastructure and the exchange of experience. For many countries, this is also an opportunity to attract highly skilled professionals without the cost of training them.

Digital nomads often create local communities and IT hubs around which digital and business infrastructure naturally develops. They also facilitate intercultural exchange and can become a valuable source of knowledge and experience for local professionals.

Main requirements for obtaining a digital nomad visa

To obtain a digital nomad visa, you must meet several key criteria.

First of all, you need to have official confirmation of remote work - this can be an employment contract with a foreign company or self-

employment documents. An important condition is a stable income, the level of which varies from country to country: from $312 in Albania to almost $4,000 in the UAE. Some countries, such as Uruguay or Germany, do not set a minimum income threshold at all.

The required documents for such a visa usually include:

- proof of employment in the form of contracts or agreements;

- bank statements and payment documents;

- health insurance valid in the country of residence;

- international passport;

- proof of payment of the visa fee.

Tax peculiarities and financial conditions for digital nomads

The taxation of digital nomads' income is an issue that each country solves in its own way. Some countries, such as Croatia, completely exempt foreign income from taxation, while others establish special tax regimes. However, it is important to understand that tax exemption in the host country does not cancel tax liabilities in the country of tax residence.

Countries that offer a zero tax rate for digital nomads include: Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Bermuda, Cape Verde, Costa Rica, Croatia, Curacao, Dominica, Dubai, Ecuador, Greece, Grenada, Seychelles, and Uruguay.
