One of the most popular requests is to obtain temporary protection in Bulgaria.

In this article, we will look at how a family with a small child can apply for protection in this country, what documents are required and what are the nuances of the procedure.

Request: My wife, I and our child (3 months old) are going to move to Bulgaria in July (we are currently temporarily residing in Georgia). I want to know what is the procedure for applying for temporary protection in Bulgaria (Varna). Can you legally support us in this process? I will only have three weeks of holiday from the end of June to mid-July 2025, so it is important to get the documents done quickly. The priority is to obtain temporary protection for my wife and child, as well as health insurance if necessary.

The procedure for obtaining temporary protection in Bulgaria

1. Who is eligible for temporary protection?

According to European standards (Council Directive 2001/55/EC) and Bulgarian legislation, temporary protection is granted to Ukrainian citizens who are forced to leave Ukraine due to military operations.

2. How to apply for temporary protection in Varna?

After arriving in Bulgaria, you have to apply to the Migration Service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Bulgaria (MIA) in Varna. You can submit your application in person and it will be processed on the spot.

Useful contacts in Varna:

- Migration Service (exact address will be provided upon arrival).

- Ukrainian House in Varna (organises consular services every Wednesday from 13:00 to 16:30). Phone: +359 878 773073 (on Wednesdays from 13:00 to 16:00). Information is also available on the Facebook page.

- Embassy of Ukraine in Bulgaria (can provide advice on the application process).

3. What documents are required?

To apply, you must have:

- Passport of each family member.

- Birth certificate of the child.

- Documents confirming the reasons for protection (if any).

4. Application processing time

The decision on granting temporary protection is usually made within a few days.

Since you only have three weeks of holiday, we recommend that you start collecting documents in advance (in May-June) and get a preliminary consultation online to minimise the time spent on formalities in Bulgaria.

5. Health insurance

After obtaining temporary protection, your spouse and child can be included in the Bulgarian healthcare system. You can also take out private health insurance.
