By car in Thailand
If you've never driven in a left-hand drive country, the first few hours will be like a brain workout. U-turns, roundabouts, overtaking - everything is in the mirror image. Because of this, many people experience stress at first, but on the second or third day they get used to it and start to enjoy it.
Thai roads are generally in good condition, especially the roads between cities and highways. In cities, traffic can be chaotic: a lot of motorcycles, unexpected maneuvers, pedestrians who appear where you don't expect them. On the islands, the roads are narrow and become very slippery after rains.
The speed limits are usually as follows:
- city - 50-60 km/h,
- outside the city - up to 90 km/h,
- highways - up to 120 km/h.
The police often conduct unannounced speed and document checks, especially on highways and in resort towns. Fines start from 500 baht (~$13) and up.
Most companies include in the basic rental only third-party liability insurance (TPL), which covers damage to third parties. To protect yourself from unforeseen expenses, it is worth taking out full insurance (CDW or Super CDW) that will compensate for damage to your car without or with a minimum deductible.
In addition to car insurance, take care of medical insurance: treatment after an accident can be expensive. Many medical policies already include coverage for injuries sustained while driving a rental vehicle. You can apply for medical insurance for a trip to Thailand on our website at this link.
In the event of an accident, stay put, turn on the emergency lights, and call the police at 191. After that, immediately call the rental company - they will tell you what to do next. Try not to make any “arrangements” on the spot, even if the other driver offers to “resolve the issue without the police.”
Parking in tourist cities is usually paid. Prohibited zones are marked with red and white curbs, and yellow and black stripes indicate temporary restrictions. The most common fines are for parking incorrectly (500 baht), not wearing a seat belt (500 baht), or speeding (500 baht and up).
A scooter is a favorite mode of transportation in Phuket, Samui, or Pangani. It's cheap, mobile, and romantic. However, scooters are also the cause of most accidents.
Technically, you need a category A (motorcycle) driver's license to drive one. Many people rent a scooter with a category B license, but this is dangerous: the insurance may refuse to pay out in case of an accident.
You can rent a scooter for $5-7 per day. If you plan to ride a lot, check the brakes, tires, and lights before you leave. And always wear a helmet-the police are very strict about this rule.
Many routes between cities are tolled, but the cost is usually symbolic - from 20 to 100 baht (less than $3). Toll roads are clean, well maintained, and allow you to quickly get from Bangkok to Pattaya or Chiang Mai.
Payment is made in cash at the collection points or through special electronic cards if provided by the rental company. Plan your route in advance to avoid unpleasant surprises.
