Housing for Ukrainian refugees in Poland: another city to provide shelter
The Polish city of Ruda Śląska has received funds to transform communal premises into housing for Ukrainians. Find out more about how many housing units will become available
Poland has sheltered tens of thousands of refugees from Ukraine and is now facing the problem of accommodating citizens on its territory. Polish cities have decided to solve the housing problem by converting municipal premises into residential apartments.
In particular, the city of Ruda Słęska will receive 5 million zlotys (1 million euros) from the European Union funds to convert empty municipal premises into housing for refugees. We will tell you how many such premises will be available for Ukrainians.
How do you plan to accommodate Ukrainian refugees?
With these funds, the city authorities plan to equip 28 social apartments. To do this, they will overhaul 26 residential premises that are currently in poor condition and rebuild 3 more non-residential premises into 2 apartments.
The houses will be renovated, including replacing pipes, windows and doors, installing plumbing and electric stoves.
The work will be carried out in stages - 10 apartments will be prepared first. When the war is over and Ukrainians are able to return home, the social housing will be rented at a reasonable price to local residents.
"We all hope that the Russian aggression against Ukraine will end as soon as possible, and until that happens, we will continue to help our neighbors who are fleeing the war", - said Michał Peronczyk, President of Ruda Śląska.
How many Ukrainians have found refuge in the Polish city of Ruda Śląska?
Over the past year, the city with a population of over 100,000 residents has received several thousand Ukrainian refugees. The city authorities have prepared and equipped 9 centers for their accommodation.
In the second half of 2022, 5 municipal premises were equipped for the temporary stay of refugees who wanted to stay in the city. Currently, more than 80 people are staying in these collective centers.
In which cities in Poland are housing for Ukrainian refugees also being prepared?
Earlier, the city authorities of Kielce announced the preparation of 14 apartments for Ukrainian refugees.
A temporary accommodation center will also be set up in Zamość, Lubelskie Voivodeship. It will have 10 full-fledged apartments of a good standard, which will accommodate up to 40 people.
In addition, the Opole Voivodeship is also preparing 49 rooms for Ukrainian refugees.
