The European Commission believes that Musk's American social network violates the Digital Services Act. Find out why global companies are massively refusing to cooperate with the American businessman and why Europe has opened proceedings
On December 18, it became known that the European Commission opened proceedings for violation of the Digital Services Act (DSA) and the spread of toxic content on the social network of American billionaire Elon Musk X, formerly known as Twitter.
The proceedings were opened "after the billionaire and his company were subjected to repeated claims that they were not doing enough to stop the spread of disinformation and hatred online," Politico noted.
Charges against Elon Musk's X: why were proceedings opened?
It is noted that four investigations have been launched in parallel. In particular, regarding non-compliance with the rules for combating illegal content and disinformation, as well as advertising transparency and access to data for researchers. In addition, the EU will check the effectiveness of measures taken to combat information manipulation.
The European Commission also noted that social network X could mislead its users through a changed interface. This refers to the blue verification checkmark, which was originally used as a verification tool, but today it only serves as an indicator that the user is paying for a subscription to the social network.
And because Elon Musk's social network is part of a group of large technology companies that are subject to increased scrutiny under the DSA, "the Commission will thoroughly investigate X's compliance with the DSA to ensure that European citizens are protected online - as required by the regulation," said Margrethe Vestager, the Commission's Executive Vice President for Digital Policy.
If the EU has enough evidence and the accusations are confirmed, the social network will receive a serious fine. We are talking about 6% of the company's global revenue.

Why do global companies refuse to cooperate with Elon Musk?
Elon Musk has been repeatedly criticized for promoting content that attacks Jews on social network X. And it is for this reason that the EU first issued a warning and tightened control, and then opened proceedings against the American businessman's social network. The White House also responded very sharply to Musk's attacks, calling his actions "unacceptable and threatening to Jewish communities."
However, despite the fact that thousands of accounts that spread disinformation were removed from the social network, Musk said that Jewish activists put pressure on him and advertisers, which ultimately affects his income.
Thus, the anti-Semitic scandal has caused a large number of companies to leave the social network. In particular, Apple, Disney, Comcast, Lionsgate, and Paramount Global have announced their intention to do so.
Earlier, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk posted a meme about the Ukrainian president on the X platform. The post obviously walks a fine line between a bad joke and an insult. Read more about what it is about and how social media users reacted to it in our previous article.
