The full-scale war is now in its second year and a large number of Ukrainians who were forced to flee their homes are still abroad. However, many do not plan to stay and build their new lives in a foreign country.

For many Ukrainians, returning home is not an easy decision, as they have lived in the temporarily occupied territories or in the area of active hostilities. Some have lost their homes and have nowhere to return to.

How did the Way Home initiative come about?

From the first days of the war, the non-profit organization UFU.Global began providing legal and information support to Ukrainians on its own platform, United for Ukraine. Every day, the consulting team receives hundreds of requests for support from Ukrainians abroad.

Since mid-2023, the team has seen an increase in activity in the following areas:

Is there transportation to help get home? Are there free evacuation trains to return? What kind of assistance is provided in Ukraine to those who have returned from abroad? Is there an opportunity to get temporary housing? And many other questions.

Based on these inquiries, the UFU team has compiled the main areas for which returning Ukrainians apply: financial assistance, transportation support, legal and legal support, assistance with temporary housing and employment, and psychological support.

"Our big goal is to help Ukrainians return home and support them along the way. Only through the creation of systemic reintegration programs and solutions is it possible to return a significant number of our citizens who have lost their opportunities after the outbreak of a full-scale war," - emphasizes Kyrylo Vasyutyn, Head of the initiative.

Thus, major Ukrainian and international support organizations have already joined the initiative: Caritas Ukraine, DRC, IRC, Lobby X, AI4Good, MySyla, VisitUkraine, Find Refuge and others.

Currently, a survey of Ukrainians abroad is being conducted until January 25 to determine their willingness to return home. The purpose of the survey is to find out what kind of support people need. If you are planning to return home, please take just 5 minutes of your time to complete the survey here. This will help us to form an understanding of what support is needed most and what barriers currently exist.

We remind you! Currently, Ukraine can only be reached by land, as there are no flights to the country. Find out more about which border crossing points you can enter and where the longest queues are usually recorded in our article.
