A Green Card is always the right solution for travelling abroad. This document is an integral part of your emergency plan in case of an unforeseen situation on the road. Find out why you need a Green Card and what the consequences are if you don't have it
When planning a road trip outside of their country, every driver is faced with the need to ensure their safety and protection from unforeseen expenses. This is where the Green Card - a reliable companion in the world of international roads - comes in handy.
Green Card is an international insurance policy that serves as proof of motor third party liability insurance for your vehicle abroad. It allows you to avoid many problems with the law in countries where such insurance is compulsory, and guarantees coverage for third party compensation in the event of an accident.
Almost any motorist knows that inside his country his vehicle must be insured, otherwise you will be fined. The Green Card works according to the same scheme only abroad. This document is part of the international insurance system, so the driver is obliged to take out a policy for travelling to the member countries of the agreement. It should be noted that the EU countries bordering Ukraine are members of the Green Card agreement. In total it is required in 45 countries - all European countries, Morocco, Turkey, Israel, Tunisia, Azerbaijan.
What does the Green Card cover?
The insurance certificate does not insure the owner's property, but his liability. That is, in case of an accident, the Green Card insurance policy of the guilty party will cover the damage caused by his fault to other participants of the accident - the costs of treatment or repair of the victim's car.

How does it work?
Here is an example: you have taken out a Green Card in advance, preparing for an international trip. While travelling, you accidentally get into a minor accident that damages your car and a local man's car.
1. First of all, make sure that everyone is unharmed, otherwise provide first aid and call an ambulance.
2. Document the situation by taking photographs of the scene, damage and documents.
3. Call the police to file an official accident report.
4. Get a certificate from the police stating the circumstances of the road traffic accident (RTA).
5. Give a copy of the certificate of insurance to the victim.
6. Notify the insurance company of the accident within fifteen days.
After that, the insurance company from which the Green Card was purchased comes into play. It reimburses damage caused to third parties, it does not cover the person who caused the accident. This means that if you hit someone else's car abroad, the insurance company will pay money to the other party to the accident, not to you.
The amount of coverage for injuries and property damage under the policy depends on the country of residence, but the average amount of coverage in EU countries is 1 million euros.
Where to buy a Green Card and how much does it cost?
You can buy a Green Card both abroad and in Ukraine. However, insurance abroad will cost much more. For example, in Poland the cost of Green card for 1 month is 50 euros. In Germany, the cost of an annual policy starts from 900 euros, and per month from 150 euros.
In Ukraine, prices for a Green Card vary depending on its validity period. However, the longer the period of validity of the document, the greater the savings. Here are the prices for a Green Card on the VU portal:
- Green Card 15 days - from UAH 1120 (just over EUR 26).
- Green Card 1 month - from 1783 UAH (just over 42 euros).
- Green Card 6 months - from 9334 UAH (almost 220 euros).
- Green Card 1 year - 12446 UAH (293 EUR).
If you plan to go travelling without insurance, you may face such risks as fines, deportation, prohibition to enter the country or seizure of the car and so on.
