Sweden to expand support program for Ukrainian refugees: what is known?
The Swedish government is taking steps to improve the living conditions of Ukrainians. In particular, it has become known that the rules for registration in the population register have been relaxed and that there is access to larger payments. Find out more about how and when the conditions of stay for Ukrainians in Sweden will change
Swedish Minister of Migration Maria Malmer Stenergaard said that it will be much easier for Ukrainians to live in the country. For this purpose, a new proposal has been developed and presented, which will allow refugees to be registered much faster and receive additional benefits. Read more about the changes that await Ukrainians in Sweden in the article below.
How long will it take for Ukrainians to get a residence permit in Sweden?
According to the current rules, refugees from Ukraine are required to live in Sweden for at least 3 years to be eligible for a residence permit. However, the authorities want to reduce this period to 1 year. Thus, according to preliminary data, Ukrainians will be able to submit their data to the population register and receive a social security number after a year of residence in the country. The government wants the new rules to come into force on November 1, 2024.
It is noted that as of November 1, 2024, about 33 thousand Ukrainians will be registered in the country, which, among other things, will entitle them to assistance in entering the labor market through the employment agency program.

What are the benefits of having a social security number in Sweden?
According to the Minister of Migration, Ukrainians registered in Sweden will be entitled to medical and dental care. They will also be able to receive payments if they are at home with sick children or are on parental leave. It is also important that refugees will be able to obtain a bank ID, as this will help them to contact the authorities and other institutions more easily and quickly.
It is also noted that Ukrainians who are registered will be able to participate in a special employment program, which provides support and activities for learning Swedish and finding a job. This means that refugees will be able to receive higher payments. And if today Ukrainian refugees receive payments of SEK 71 per day (EUR 6) from the Swedish Migration Agency, in the fall they will be able to receive SEK 308 (EUR 27) per day.
However, refugees will not be able to access all benefits. In particular, they will not be able to receive child benefits or housing assistance. However, some politicians and humanitarian organizations in the country warn that the proposed measures may not be enough and that Ukrainians will need additional assistance.
We remind you! The issuance of passports for Ukrainians through the Passport Service of the State Enterprise "Document" has resumed. However, the services are currently being provided in a test mode. Read what rules you need to follow to get a ready-made document in our previous article.
