A representative of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine, Dmytro Lazutkin, recently said that young men living abroad who are 17 years old must register for military service, but they must come to the territorial recruitment centre in person. At the same time, the government believes that this will not help mobilisation.

According to Iryna Vereshchuk, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Reintegration of the Temporarily Occupied Territories, the Ministry of Defence believes that such persons should come to Ukraine and register for military service.

"Legally, the Ministry of Defence is right, because this is how the current rules are written. We in the Government are well aware that forcing students of non-mobilisation age to go to Ukraine to undergo the relevant procedures will only increase the workload on the Military Registration and Enlistment Committee and will not help with mobilisation," she says.

At the same time, Fedir Venislavsky, a member of the Committee on National Security, Defence and Intelligence, told Radio Liberty that the law on mobilisation does not contain such a provision.

According to Venislavsky, the statement by the representative of the Ministry of Defence should be supported by some kind of legal acts.

According to Venislavsky, the law on mobilisation, which came into force on 18 May, does not contain any provision that young men aged 17 and over must come and register.

The MP also promised to raise the issue of the Ministry of Defence's information policy during a discussion at the Committee on National Security, Defence and Intelligence. Venislavsky drew attention to the shortcomings in the Ministry's information policy related to mobilisation.

The government is preparing a postponement

Vereshchuk said that they want to solve this problem with an additional resolution, which has already been developed, is being approved and will be adopted in the near future.

Thus, persons of conscription and non-conscription age who are currently abroad will be granted a deferral of registration - either until they return to Ukraine or until the end of martial law.
