The annual rating of the best cities for living has been compiled. Kyiv was at the bottom of the list, while the best region was Western Europe. Find out which city took the first place, and who was in the list of outsiders
The Economist has published its annual ranking of the best cities to live in. Kyiv is among the ten worst. We will tell you who took the top places below.
The researchers compiled the list of 173 cities in several categories: stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure.
Ranking of the best cities to live in
In 2024, the Austrian capital was among the leaders. Vienna, ranked first, received the highest score in four of the five index categories. In the Culture and Environment category alone, the city was awarded 93.5 points.

Overall, Western European cities received an average score of 92 out of 100 this year. This result is lower than last year due to the situation with stability amid large protests.

Kyiv is among the ten worst
The capital of Ukraine was ranked 165th in the ranking, receiving only 44.5 points. The low ranking is due to the fact that the war in Ukraine is still ongoing, and this significantly affects the categories used in the ranking.
At the same time, Damascus (the capital of Syria) became the worst city to live in, followed by Tripoli (Libya).
The top ten worst cities to live in
• Caracas (Venezuela) - 44.9
• Kyiv (Kyiv) - 44.5
• Port Moresby (Papua New Guinea) - 44.1
• Harare (Zimbabwe) - 43.8
• Dhaka (Bangladesh) - 43
• Karachi (Pakistan) - 42.7
• Lagos (Nigeria) - 42.2
• Algiers (Algeria) - 42
• Tripoli (Libya) - 40.1
• Damascus (Syria) - 30.7
It should also be noted that Tel Aviv (Israel) experienced the biggest drop in the ranking - it fell from 92nd to 112th place due to the ongoing war with Hamas.
The Economist notes that the overall index of living comfort has increased slightly over the past year - but only by 0.06 points. Deteriorating stability and infrastructure in a number of advanced economies offset structural improvements in health and education in several cities in developing countries.
