The European Commission has announced that from 7 July, all new cars sold in Europe will be required to have a built-in speed monitoring function. The relevant sensors have been installed in cars before, but now they have become mandatory. The article below explains how speed control works.

Speed control sensor in European cars: what is known

Intelligent Speed Assist (ISA) is an innovative technology used in modern European cars to improve road safety. It helps drivers to comply with speed limits by reminding them of the current restrictions.

According to current EU legislation, all new vehicles on the market must be equipped with Intelligent Speed Assist (ISA) from July 2022. For models released earlier, this feature was not mandatory until July 2024.

Intelligent Speed Assist: how does it work?

ISA technology uses a camera that scans road signs to determine the current speed limit. The system compares the information received with the actual speed of the vehicle.

If you are exceeding the speed limit, ISA can give you visual and audible signals. These can include illumination of the speed limit sign on the dashboard, an audible alarm, or even steering wheel vibration.

Drivers can ignore the system's alerts and even turn it off, but the next time they use the car, ISA will be enabled by default.

The EU has left the exact wording of speeding reminders to car manufacturers, but the available ISA options include not only audiovisual alerts but even additional resistance to the accelerator pedal.

It is also noted that initially, the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC) proposed the availability of an ISO engine power reduction function, but car manufacturers refused, leaving drivers to regulate their own speed.

All drivers abroad should remember that a Green Card insurance policy is mandatory for legal and safe driving on European roads.

The Green Card is a mandatory international motor third party liability insurance policy that covers the costs of compensation for damage to life, health and property of third parties caused by an accident in the territory of the member states of the international Green Card agreement.

It is better to buy insurance online because it is quick and easy. On the Visit Ukraine portal, you can apply for a Green Card online from a licensed insurer. Packages are available for different periods from 15 days to 1 year for cars and trucks, trailers and semi-trailers for trucks, as well as motorcycles and scooters.
