On the eve of Independence Day, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Ukraine for the first time in the history of bilateral relations. The head of the Indian government met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Here's how the visit was memorable.

The attack on Okhmatdyt was the most significant. How did Modi decide to come to Ukraine?

It's worth noting that on 8 August, the day of the attack on the Okhmatdyt hospital in Kyiv, Modi was on a visit to russia. The reason for his visit was allegedly to secure the early release of Indians from the russian army in talks with russian dictator vladimir putin.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reacted strongly to his visit to russia.

It's a huge disappointment and a crushing blow to peace efforts to see the leader of the world's largest democracy hugging the world's bloodiest criminal in moscow on a day like this,’ Zelensky wrote on social media site X.

According to the head of the President's Office, Andriy Yermak, he had a telephone conversation with India's national security adviser immediately afterwards. In the conversation, Yermak spoke about the brutal russian attack on the hospital.

It was after this conversation that 24 hours later, Ukraine received a message that Modi had decided on the date of his visit. After that, teamwork began to prepare the visit.

The visit to Kyiv

On Friday, 23 August, Modi finally arrived in Kyiv, and this visit was historic - for the first time in history, the head of the Indian government came to the Ukrainian capital.

According to the President's Office, Zelenskyy and Modi discussed many topics during the talks. First of all, it was russia's war against Ukraine. All of Kyiv's principled positions were voiced to the Indian prime minister.

In addition, as Zelenskyy said after the talks with the Indian prime minister, Ukraine and India agreed on a number of agreements on cooperation in the medical, agricultural, humanitarian and cultural spheres.

The parties also prepared a joint statement ‘on building a strategic partnership between our countries, trade between our countries and military-technical cooperation’.

How did India react to Modi's visit to Kyiv?

After the talks between the Indian and Ukrainian sides, Indian Foreign Minister Subramanyam Jaishankar said that it was up to Ukraine to decide whether to invite russia to a second peace summit.

The minister also refrained from commenting on the ‘peace plan’ presented by China. However, he noted that this is a matter for ‘interested parties’.

‘Regarding what China could have proposed, I think it is not for us to answer, but for the stakeholders. Therefore, I would suggest that this question should be addressed to the Ukrainian government,’ said Jaishankar.

We remind you! The US Embassy has issued a warning to its citizens in Ukraine about the increased level of threat from the russian federation. Read here how to prepare and ensure your safety in case of an emergency.
