Since the beginning of the full-scale war, Denmark, like most European countries, has opened its doors to Ukrainians who fled the fighting. Some citizens come to this country for a short time, and some for a long period. Many of them bring their own cars, which raises questions about insurance and the need to take out a motor third party liability policy. Let's find out whether a local motor third party liability policy is mandatory for Ukrainians.

Do I need to take out a local motor third party liability policy in Denmark?

If you arrive in Denmark for up to 90 days with a car with Ukrainian licence plates, you can use the Green Card, an international motor third party liability insurance policy that allows you to use your car in most European countries, including Denmark. This will be considered sufficient coverage, and you will not need to take out a local motor third party liability policy.

By the way, you can apply for a Green Card on favourable terms on the Visit Ukraine portal. We offer a convenient way of applying, which allows you to insure your car without leaving your home.

At the same time, please note that if your stay in Denmark exceeds 90 days and you plan to use a car with Ukrainian licence plates, you will need to either extend the validity of the Green Card or consider taking out a local policy, especially if you plan to register the car in Denmark. As a rule, after a 90-day stay, you need to register the vehicle under Danish law, which entails the mandatory issuance of a local insurance policy.

What kind of policy do I need to take out in Denmark for a long-term stay?

In Denmark, a motor third party liability insurance policy (ansvarsforsikring) is mandatory, covering damages caused to other persons in the event of an accident.

This policy is mandatory for all vehicles registered in the country and is a basic requirement for operating a car. It is recommended that you take out a local policy if you decide to register your car in Denmark, even if your Green Card is still valid.

You can calculate the cost of insurance for your car in Denmark, for example, on the local CODAN portal.

If you need to take out a local insurance policy in Denmark, follow these steps:

1. Choose an insurance company. There are major insurance companies in Denmark, such as Tryg, Topdanmark and Gjensidige, that provide car insurance policies. Check out their offers and compare the terms and conditions to find the right policy for you.

2. Provide the necessary documents. Usually, you will need an identity card, proof of your right to stay in Denmark (for example, a temporary residence permit or work visa), and the car's documents.

3. After choosing a company and completing all the documents, you will have to pay for the policy. The cost of motor third party liability insurance varies depending on your driving experience, car brand and other factors.

What if I don't take out insurance?

If you do not have a local insurance policy, if it is required, you may be fined and banned from using your car on Danish roads. In addition, if an accident occurs without insurance coverage, you will have to pay all damages and compensation out of your own pocket, which can be a serious financial burden.

We remind you! The standard of living in Denmark is much higher than in most Southern European countries. We talked about the cost of renting a house, utilities, food and entertainment in the country.
