When entering Hungary by car, it is important for Ukrainian citizens to understand the insurance rules in order to avoid possible fines and problems on the roads. The question of whether it is necessary to take out a local motor third party liability policy (basic compulsory insurance) or whether an international Green Card is sufficient is of concern to many motorists.

Do I need a local motor third party liability policy?

If you are planning a short-term stay in Hungary, the Ukrainian Green Card is a sufficient document confirming the availability of insurance coverage. ‘The Green Card covers the driver's liability for causing damage to third parties in the countries participating in the international system, including Hungary. This means that Ukrainians do not need to take out a separate local motor third party liability policy for a short stay.

Therefore, for a short-term trip to this country, you can use the Green Card. You can get this policy quickly and at favourable prices on the Visit Ukraine portal.

However, if you are going to stay in Hungary for a longer period of time or reside there permanently, you may need to obtain a local insurance policy. In such cases, it is better to consult with Hungarian insurance companies to avoid misunderstandings.
