Since 2022, Lithuania has become one of the most popular countries in Europe where Ukrainians who fled the war have found refuge. Along with moving to this country, some citizens faced the question of how best to insure their cars. Let's find out whether Ukrainians who have moved to this country need to take out a local car insurance policy or whether they can get by with another way of insuring their car.

Do you need a car insurance policy in Lithuania?

In Lithuania, as in many EU countries, a policy of compulsory motor third party liability insurance (CTPCI) is required for all cars used on public roads. MTPL covers the costs of damage caused to third parties in the event of an accident. This includes compensation for damage to other people's property and medical expenses if someone is injured.

Lithuanian law strictly enforces this requirement. Driving a car without CTPCI entails serious fines, and in the event of an accident, the driver may also be held liable for the damage that CTPCI would have covered.

Do visiting Ukrainians need MTPL insurance?

There is a temporary solution for Ukrainians entering Lithuania by car - the Green Card international insurance policy. This policy allows Ukrainian drivers to temporarily move around Lithuania and other EU countries, covering their liability to third parties in the event of an accident. However, it is important to remember that the Green Card has a limited validity period and is designed mainly for short trips or temporary stays.

By the way, you can apply for a Green Card directly from your smartphone on the Visit Ukraine portal. A user-friendly interface and affordable insurance packages will allow you to order a Green Card in a matter of minutes.

In what cases should Ukrainians take out Lithuanian motor third party liability insurance?

If you plan a long-term stay or permanent residence in Lithuania, for example, as part of temporary protection or a residence permit, you need to take out a local CTP policy. Long-term use of a car with Ukrainian licence plates and a Green Card policy in Lithuania may lead to legal consequences, as it is considered to be an evasion of compulsory insurance and taxation in Lithuania.

In order to take out a CTP insurance in Lithuania, you need to provide:

- Passport or identity card;

- Documents for the car (technical passport);

- Permission to stay in the country;

- International driving licence.

You can take out a local car insurance policy with such companies as Lietuvos draudimas, Gjensidige, Ergo, Compensa and a number of others.

The cost of a CTP insurance policy in Lithuania may vary depending on the type of vehicle, driving experience and insurance company. On average, the price starts at EUR 100 per year for a standard car, but the exact cost depends on many factors.

We remind you! About half of the Ukrainians who moved to Lithuania after the war found work. During this time, they paid €205 million to the budget. We wrote about the professions most often chosen by Ukrainian citizens in Lithuania.
