The Czech Republic is calling for a moratorium on Ukrainian refugees to be decided in advance. This will allow for a smooth transition of temporary protection status holders to standard rules.

According to Radio Prague International, Czech Interior Minister Vit Rakushen noted that about 60 per cent of refugees are Ukrainians. However, according to him, if 200-250 thousand people apply for any type of permit at the same time, it will take some time to consider these applications.

How do you propose to solve this problem?

Rakushen believes that it is necessary to at least resolve the issue of a moratorium for people under temporary protection until the Ministry of Internal Affairs has time to administratively consider their transition to standard residence permits. In his opinion, this period should last at least a year.

‘On the day the war ends, we should already have a mechanism for ending temporary protection, because this could trigger a secondary wave of migration, for example, for family reunification. During this wave, a moratorium should already be prepared for people living under temporary protection so that they can stay here in the future,’ the Interior Minister said, adding that this should be a pan-European decision so that all EU countries have the same conditions.

In addition, the so-called assisted returns are also being considered, when the Czech state would help people return home, the minister added.

What is the current situation with the influx of refugees in the Czech Republic?

According to the Interior Minister, the winter and Russia's constant shelling of Ukraine's energy infrastructure have not increased the number of new refugees from Ukraine. The number of new applications for temporary protection in the first week of December was lower than in November.

‘Of course, we expected an increase in the number of applications for temporary protection in the second half of November and in December. But in fact, from two thousand applications per week, as it was in October, this number fell to about 1700 per week,’ he said.

We remind you! The Czech Parliament approved the extension of temporary protection status for Ukrainian citizens.
