Dragobrat: visit the highest mountain ski resort in Ukraine
Dragobrat is the highest ski resort in the Ukrainian Carpathians and a favourite among outdoor enthusiasts. Find out all about the history, interesting facts and the most popular leisure activities in Dragobrat
The Dragobrat ski resort got its name from the small intermountain valley where it is located. The height of the valley (and, accordingly, the resort) is 1300-1400 metres above sea level, making it the record holder in Ukraine. Active sports are the most popular here, with skiers and snowboarders coming from all over the world. The nearest settlement is Yasinia (18 km away), and the nearest mountain is Stig in the Svydovets massif (the resort is located at its foot). Also nearby are the mountains Blyznytsia (1883 m), Pervyi Zhandarm (1763 m) and Second Zhandarm (approximately 1800 m). Unique natural conditions of Dragobrat
The mountains near Dragobrat are arranged in a horseshoe shape, so there is a stable snow cover from November to May. This is one of the reasons why the resort is so popular. And also the extraordinary air: it is in the Dragobrat valley that coniferous Carpathian forests and the alpine zone meet. As you can see, nature has also taken care of health improvement. The scenery here is also impressive: on the one hand, you can see the highest massif of the Carpathian Mountains - Chornohora (Hoverla and Petros), and on the other - the Gorgany mountain range (Dovbushanka and Sinyak).
What is the history of Dragobrat?
The first recreational building appeared here in 1956. It was the Dragobrat shelter, a branch of the Edelweiss tourist centre from the village of Yasinya. The building has survived to this day. At that time, a popular tourist route was laid here - from the Chornohora ridge to Synevyr. Even before the early 80s of the last century, extreme winter sports enthusiasts from all over the country gathered here. They were members of sports clubs, had self-made portable ski lifts and climbed the mountain almost every winter.
In 1980, the first large 1,000-metre-long diesel-powered lift was built here. The reason for the construction was not recreational at all - a scientific laboratory planned to study Mount Stig. Later, scientists and officials began to come here to relax, breathe the mountain air and go skiing.
In 1991, the laboratory was destroyed by a fire, in 1993, the remains of the farm were bought by former skiers from Poltava, and in 1996-1997, Dragobrat began to receive tourists again.
